You are joking, right? We pile some stuff on lots of older stuff until someone feels like reinventing the wheel. Then we topple over the entire pile and start all over again - until someone feels like reinventing the wheel again.

No time for that. We constantly are so busy reinventing the wheel (sometimes even in several ways at the same time) that nothing ever matures to that level.

Despite all its faults, it's probably still the least intrusive AV out there (which still isn't saying much).
What alternative are you recommending (other than none at all...or "common sense")?

I'm using Avast at home and I'm satisfied, it's like it doesn't exist yet it detected a couple of threats.
Honestly I'm not having malware/virus/whatever problems since more than 10 years. I still keep an AV installed for the same reason I always drive with seatbelts on, but as of now Avast is the best free AV I've found. Not free I loved Sophos - in facts I'm always tempted of buying a license. It's lightweight, powerful and never gave me any problem.

If you're feeling a little more adventurous, you can run UTM (Unified Threat Manager) licensed in a home setting with negligible restrictions - it's quite the beast, but does give some useful features...You do need a dedicated machine / VM / coupe of network cards, but I'm running it (actually in consort with pFSense / Unifi USG and Snort) both on my main net and in my virtual Pen testing lab and quite impressed with it
Sophos mobile security is also free for android and ios - I cna recommend the android version
C# has already designed away most of the tedium of C++.

Hmmmm...well, Avast isn't without its own faults (granted, neither is Defender), but if I want something that I can just leave to do its own thing, and I can choose between a third-party and those who know the OS best...I'd rather choose the OS maker. Which also means I don't have to worry about the AV getting broken (or worse, hosing the whole OS) when an OS patch comes along.

Hi All,
I am playing trying to get a program or script to send stuff out of a serial port in Linux. I have a reasonable success rate in M$ but for the embedded side of things it's all Linux. We used to have secondary machines that ran Linux, these however were removed and we were given a PC with an emulator. First time using the emulator and I think I have found a flaw in the plan. The emulator cannot talk to the hardware ports...

Have you tried spinning up a Hyper-V (Linux) machine? You'd need Win Pro and a PC that supports it. Though, not sure how well Hyper-V does at providing port access.

I use a Linux VM to send serial data (via, for instance, USB->TTL converters) almost every day. You just need proper rights to access the serial port.

wow, just wow, might move this to rant, But seriously. New changes are in DEV and Training Areas. Boss wants it moved to prod right now. Ok, It has been thru QA on both environments weeks ago. It is good to go. All Documentation is in order everything is ready. Looking in TFS for changes from Developer 1 (D1) D1 has not checked in their code? what the elephant?
Discussion with D1. Oh I always do that. I never check in until after it is in production. That way I can roll back easier. I don't have to even think about things? huh? What? head shake.
So you are meaning to tell me you haven't for years checked in your code and because you were 'out' yesterday afternoon they boss gets to be told that no one else can do this because we don't know where you put the code? Have a nice conversation with the boss about that one.
I almost feel sorry for D1.

Wow, that sucks. Although, I don't know if I'd blame D1 or the lead/manager. When I've played at lead/manager, in the past, I wouldn't let D1 reach that point. To me, sounds like either D1 doesn't have enough training, to know how to use TFS properly, or the team's approach to source code management is a bit too laissez faire.
