I'm the one who suggested Pi-hole to you a week or two ago--nice follow-up.
All I can add at this point is that I'm not as sophisticated a network admin as you are. You're right about a secondary DNS--if the Pi-hole machine goes down (a VM in my case)--like the power going out--and I forget to power the host back on, ads will still manage to sneak in until I remember to power the VM back up.
Other than that--it certainly suits my needs well enough I can say that for me, it's the closest "set and forget" piece of software I've used in a while.

I do it with everything even after all these years in IT I still overcomplicate things when programming - not for tech sake but because it takes me a long time to see the woods from the trees - then comes the lightbulb moment

WSell, I just got back from the anual Society of Petroleum Engineer's Convention in Dallasa, Tx. It was interesting in that I ran across a few Professors, who told me that my PhD Committee had met and decided that they'll make sure I graduate this semester. So that's gopod news, finally. I finished the research and writing 4 yearts ago, just still need to schedulre my defense. That should happen in the next few weeks!
