I have a feeling you might like Midvinterblot. 
A spare horse, a couple of virgins or a king makes a party. And a politician makes a good replacement for a king.
Being religious is not a requirement, it rather has a tendency to kill the fun.

Interesting, I grew up in Wales and never heard of this. I guess it's one of those weird rituals of those strange southerners - including a certain will known CPer.

Same for me, only ever seen it mentioned on websites. Suspect that like may Xmas "facts" that do the rounds every year, someone made it up and all the rest copy it without any checking.
By way of an example, looking for a quiz tiebreaker question, I recently found a "fact" on a company website about three popular Christmas songs and how many times they would be played in the UK on radio over the festive period.
After a quick google of "How many radio stations in UK" and firing up the calculator, it transpired that if the stated answer was correct, every radio station in the country would have to play one of the three songs once every 5 seconds, 24 hours a day for 40 consecutive days.
And from then on, the magic was dead …

I think it is about the 22th of December as the first day of the winter and not about the upcoming Christmas...
(Google has the capability to show different Google-Doodle to different people, for instance only I see 'Happy Birthday' on my birthday, and only in Israel we see Hanukkah, me think)

[pedant mode]Well ... no. A sidereal day is ~ 23H 56M 4S - hence leap years - but even if you take the "generally accepted" day of "24 hours" the "real day" is different because the earth's rotation is slowing - most are around 40ms longer than that.[/pedant mode]

No! I stand by my statement. 
Yesterday solar transit at Greenwich was at 11h 57m 52.624s whereas today it was at 11h 58m 22.523s.
Thus today, noon to noon, is 29.899 seconds longer than yesterday.
If you want that in radians, then it's 3.1301611127 versus 3.134504411585 (just to 12 sig.figs.)
Like I said - the days are getting longer.
