I have an old notebook which I only use to toast EPROMS, sample the Elf's old cassette tapes (or as digital recorder when I save something with the Elf) and to run terminal emulation, also for the Elf. It has one of the first Intel Celery processors. THE CD drive has been dead for almost 20 years now, but for the other stuff it's good enough, even if it's a museum piece itself.
I just started it for the first time in a while - and it tried to boot from the supposedly dead CD drive. That CD must have been in there for ages and it never even try to boot from it. Now it did and promptly complained that the (copied) CD is not quite readable.
I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats.

Yes, if you translate it literally. The grammatical gender for a harddisk is indeed feminine and another mistranslation for 'geht' would be to say that it walks.

I find the German language to be fascinating. In French a hard disk ("disque dur") would be masculine.
Why inanimate objects have a gender at all, I have no idea. As a software developer who thinks in algorithms, I've never managed to come up with a simple rule that would help establish the correct association. Back in school, I simply "got it" going with my gut and always got great grades in French, but ask me to explain what the actual rules are...and I wouldn't know where to start.
Just as well I've never had to write a grammar checker.

I don't think that any rules exist anymore. Languages are older than most objects and the words for these objects often were inherited from previous meanings of the word, along with the gender. We would have to know the original meaning of the word and the culture at that time to get a hint why they would have used a particular gender.
A little like seamen referring to their ship as 'she', even in languages that have no grammatical genders. At least we can still understand why they do that.

Several years ago we bought an expensive external hard drive with 4 Seagate 1TB drives configured as RAID-5. Over the course of our first year of ownership, each of the hard drives failed. Fortunately with the RAID-5 configuration we never lost any data. I did not replace the drives with Seagate, especially after the manufacturer of the external drive was charging 3X the price of the same drive from newegg. I replaced them with used Western Digital drives salvaged from another project. After replacing all of the original Seagate drives with WD units, the external drive worked like a champ for quite a while. We bought another external drive, except this one has 4 6TB drives, again in RAID-5. Shortly after it arrived, and I copied the data to it from the original drive, the RAID controller in the original unit crapped out. I still have the WD 1TB component drives for use as extra storage in our development machines when we need it.
I'm not a fan of Seagate if I can avoid them. I've never had a Western Digital drive fail.

Yes to Western digital. I've had good experiences with them too. Their green drives are terrible performers though, and get a black for a system drive, whatever you do. Other than that, you can't really go wrong.
