Using varibale in sql Query

hello guys,
i am developing an application for online examination in which i am using a variable "total" in which i am storing the score now i want to use that variable in sql query to insert the value stored in that variable in table where scores will be saved against the candidates name i am able to insert the candidates name in table but i dont know how should i use the variable "total" in sql query to update my table needed help....
