WestJet Christmas Miracle: real-time giving[^]
It's worth watching the 5 minutes. The airline sets up a kiosk where the passengers tell Santa what they want for Christmas. While the flight is in the air they are buying and wrapping the presents at the other end.
Cool story.

Last Thursday I posted about early snow, and - with a bit of irony - said that there is no school here if snow over 2 cm.
It became the ever largest snowing since there are recorded statistics about it. We got 97 cm of snow, 4 days with no electricity, no phone of any kind, poor water supply and -5 Celsius.
Even today that we do have all this back there are other 14,000 houses that did not...
I'm not questioning your powers of observation; I'm merely remarking upon the paradox of asking a masked man who he is (V).

Is that a typo or genuine? For somewhere that doesn't get a lot of snow, that is a hell of a change, not surprised the place can't cope.
If you think about it, my southern friends in Englandshire also can't cope with more than 2cm.

Here in Sub-Tropical Bedfordshire even the threat of snow causes disruption!

It's no typo.
There are records of snow since 1920, but nothing like this happened ever since.
Even with this 97 the long time average is under 15!!!

A lot of folk around here have gas powered electric generators, though I opted a few years ago for a couple solar panels and about a 1Kwh of battery storage. Used it recently actually to power up the DSL modem and laptop (the phones were still working) while the power was out for a couple hours. Nothing like 4 days though. Reminds me of an ice storm a few years back where some folks were out of power for more than a week.

How well would that actually work in a winter storm though? Even if it was snow you could sweep off the roof with a broom (and assuming it didn't knock your ladder down) and not a slab of ice you'd need thermite to remove, wouldn't the low sun angle, short days, and cloudy sky severely nerf your power generation rate?
I do wish there was a practical way to keep my modem/router running as long as my laptop without breaking the bank though. In theory one of my 1300/1500VA upses should be up to the task, but they self discharge in 5 or 6 hours with no load other than their own monitoring circuitry.

Lots of yellow snow?
