How odd that I've never gotten a SPAM originating from a Comcast IP. But I know what your talking about. Machines on Comcast's network, as well as others, have been hijacked by trojan horses to send out a few hundred SPAM's at a time, here and there, so the users won't notice the extra traffic on their connections. It's s a very sneaky way to get around SPAM blockers that block by source domain.
Comcast is pretty strict about not running servers on your connection. Believe me, I've been hassled more than a few times about the web/ftp servers I run for my own private use. In my experience, someone sending out millions, if not thousands of SPAM's would get disconnected pretty quick for violating the TOS.

Hi!
I am new to VB, and have a project for our library that requires some VB programming to compare two excel wbooks. The idea is to compare two alphabetical lists of journals, and combine the records, where they are repeated in both lists, to a third list that weeds out duplicates, and records only the most complete record.
Do any of you have suggestions on how this code should look?

I'm also new to VB.. relatively. Anyway, if you are dealing with Excel, u can use VBA( Visual Basic Application) to do that. That's what i'm using now for VB6 developer. But I think it still works for VB.NET ,... not too sure.
That's for the code language to look out for. As for the design, Have to think about it... but shoul be easy once you got hold of the language. (At least I feel its easier than the language itself for beginners)

I am trying to pass data between text boxes and can only get it to happen one-way. I have formA and open formB. Both forms are open and have textboxes on both. I can create a command button on formA to get the text from a text box on formB, but when I create a command button on formB to push the text back to formA it error out with no instance of object.
I dim frm as formA and get to see the properties and controls of formA. Using a statement like
me.frm.textbox1.text = me.formB.textbox2.text
Any suggestions??

You need to give formB a way to reference formA. One way of going about this is to add a private field of type formA to formB and then pass the calling instance of formA to formB in its constructor:
(In formA...)

dim frmB as new formB(Me)
(In formB...)
<br />
Private frm as formA<br />
Public Sub New(ByVal frmRef as formA)<br />
frm = frmRef<br />
End Sub
Then, in formB you can say frm.TextBox1.Text = "Howdy from formB!"
As an aside, you may want to reconsider the way you are designing your app. It might be a better idea to add public properties to your forms and update the display with these properties than to allow direct access to the controls from other classes. This would make it a lot easier to alter your classes in the future.
For example, as it stands now, if you decide that you want to use a combo box instead of a text box you will have to change the code in both forms instead of just the form that is implementing the change.

I'm glad you got it working, but unless this is a throw away app, you may end up kicking yourself later when you decide to change the layout of your UI. A little extra coding now to encapsulate your classes will save you a lot of coding later.
However, if you expect never to touch it again once it's done, public fields will work fine.

Hi,
I'm trying to run a script on a remote machine using WshRemote object. I'm getting a Permission denied error (Err No:800a0046).....i don't know how to configure the remote machine...Or am i missing anything else...(assume i hv full control over the remote pc and can change settings as i wish)

The error message would lead me to believe that you DON'T have full rights to the target machine. It looks like your process is logging into the target machine as Guest.

Ok, lets say you wanted to create a reusable class to communicate with a SQL database. This class has a method called "OpenConnection" wich accepts an aritrary amount of parameters buy you want one of these parameters to be an enumeration of the avialable SQL servers. In other words, you want a drop down list of all servers available at design time. A dynamic enum within the class would work great buy I dont know if it is possible. Is there any way to accomplish this?

Enums are simply a cleaner and more maintainable version of constants. If you were to create an enum at runtime (which is possible, using dynamic compilation or Reflection.Emit) what exactly would you do with it? How would you test for it in your calling method?
Is there a reason you method can't accept a string array which contains the names of your servers as a parameter?

Well i don't really know whether i should be here, but i'm just after some advice really. I'm 18yrs old, and am studying C at the moment, which i'm finding challenging to say the least. I'm probably going to Leeds University to study Computer Science later on this year, and am just wondering if C and VB are the best languages to start off on? - This is what i've heard. I'm interested in gaining a grasp of object orientated stuff, as well as a more general purpose code, like C.
If anyone can shed any light on this, or just offer me some friendly advice to a beginner-programmer, then please please get in touch.

If you really want to learn programming.. you need to learn a real fully object oriented language like C++...
VB6 is great but it teachs bad programming habits..
understanding C++ and object oriented programming well will help you learning C# , VB.NET later.

I too would not recommend VB. It doesn't do OOP well and you will want to switch to something else.
If you are having a challenge with C then C++ is not going to be easier. I suggest starting with Borland Turbo Pascal (or at least some version of pascal) which is what most CompSci majors start with and have for over 20 years t most universities. It seems to be a good language to learn on. I myself started with Fortran but that was a long time ago...
Turbo Pascal can be written OO or not so after you learn the basics of programming you can move on to OOP.
C is also great but personally I would recommend learning C and C++ as a second/third language. I'm sure there are some who can dive right in and will disagree with me but for most beginners Pascal has earned the mantle of being the language of educators.

I would recommend learning C first, and then C++. Its a very logical manner to learn the two probably most important languages you could learn. They are both fairly complex, but if you know them well, development for Windows and *nix systems gets infinitely easier. VB isn't even really a OO language, it just is a bastardization of OO, its primary goal being to "protect" you from yourself. VB is ok for very small, quick programs, but programming a large project in VB is almost unmanageable.

You can check to see if the mail was successfully posted to YOUR mail server, but you can't determine if the send to the recipient was actually successfull. This would require you to monitor your mailbox for any messages that came back from the destination server saying that the delivery was unsuccessfull. This is also complicated by the fact that not every mail server will send a reply at all, and not every mail server will send the same format for a delivery failure message.

You shouldn't user WinSock, instead use System.Net.Sockets... If you are not familiar with these, there are a lot of articles on that namespace here
