you can try this solution as well..
DataGridViewImageColumn photoColumn = new DataGridViewImageColumn();
photoColumn.DataPropertyName = "Photo";
photoColumn.Width = 200;
photoColumn.HeaderText = "Image";
photoColumn.ReadOnly = true;
photoColumn.ImageLayout = DataGridViewImageCellLayout.Normal;
dataGridView.Columns.Add(photoColumn);

yes XAMl does have effect on each time your itemsource gets updated..
dont do this..clear your itemsource first and also why you need to make it NULL?.
timeSteps.ItemsSource = null;
TimeStepDataCollection.Clear();

if your existing itemsource binding property is present in your ViewModel, you can get add column to it..since your maintaining ObservableCollection , it can be added to it..

Try setting the image from dataGridView Cellformatting event.
void dataGridView1_CellFormatting(object sender, DataGridViewCellFormattingEventArgs e)
{
if (dataGridView1.Columns[e.ColumnIndex].Name == "ImageColumn")
{
e.Value = Image.FromFile(@"C:\Pictures\TestImage.jpg");
}
}

Quick Clarification.
1.You are looking for Auto-Populate Textbox or Auto-Complete TextBox
2.Is it a Search Textbox that needs to be Auto completed whenever your types text in it.
3.you need some Auto-populated value to be shown.

See these are all not values, these are your dataGridColumn's, which you use in your dataGrid
Rate - 1st column in dataGrid
Supply - 2nd Column
Amount - 3rd Column
you can Pass corresponding Column's index to this method as per your logic
