I got a hands on opportunity with the Wii U a while back, and I think it has a pretty good chance. I think this time Nintendo managed to hit both the hardcore and casual gamers: they have the hardware to play some serious titles (beyond a glitch in the demo, Batman Arkham City felt just like the PC version, with a few conveniences from the touch screen, nothing too gimmicky) and the flexibility of the Wii for casual games (it is compatible with Wii controllers for starters). All together I'd say it's a pretty solid contender, though it may have difficulty when Sony and Microsoft make their next generation, but how far away is that? And, if they get out this much sooner, they could get a leg up in snatching up developers and customers.
Now, personally I think the console wars are hilarious, when you can just get a PC and upgrade it piecewise cheaper than buying a new console every few years, plus it does so much more...but even then I'm actually considering getting a Wii U, there are some games on it I would definitely like to play (biggest one for me right now is Pikmin 3, I love that series).
