Welcome to the Lounge

For lazing about and discussing anything in a software developer's life that takes your fancy except programming questions.

Technical discussions are encouraged, but click here to ask your programming question.

The Lounge is rated PG. If you're about to post something you wouldn't want your kid sister to read then don't post it. No flame wars, no abusive conduct, no programming questions and please don't post ads.

Can you say "Holodeck?"

There will never be holodecks if everyone spends all their time and effort on obtaining millions of spurious patents for the basic technology behind it and the miniscule details in its implementation.

All tech is going to suffer because of the "ownership of concept" patent issues.

Implementation ideas alone were never patentable, until recently. You had to have something concrete and functional, and things like "putting curved corners on a device that is to he stored in trouser pockets" would never have even come close to getting a patent; it's just common sense, it's not something where you can say "I came up with something no-one had ever thought of, and made plans for a functional device".

Can you imagine the world we would live in now, if the pioneers of Physics, Mathematics, chemistry, and biology had gone the same route as the "I make minor changes to computer code and the shape of plastic shells" idiots of today?

So don't expect your descendants to live in the world of Star Trek, because it can't evolve from the world we live in now.

That's not to say that it doesn't shoot them in the foot, sometimes -- I much prefer Android's new "swipe left-to-right anywhere on the screen to unlock" to the slidery-unlockery gizmo, so, by protecting their "ingenious new invention" (a switch that does nothing but switch between On and Off), apple has ended up with a worse interface.
I wanna be a eunuchs developer! Pass me a bread knife!
