Hi All,
My one home XP machine fell over so am in the process of a rebuild, it has to be XP as family know how that one works(?). The virus killing software started to misbehave (mmm odd haven't got time), then something else broke (darn! I will fix that when I get time) then XP elephanted up. So slightly hung over started the format C cycle have it booting to Win XP but can't get Security Essentials to install (it bombs with an Error code saying something is stopping it), or the virus killing software to reintall properly. I'm thinking virus, but I have only used the install media that came with the PC anybody any clues? or is it a plan to force the user to upgrade? (unlikely but...)

Is the install media optical, or magnetic? If it's optical, then it should be ok, if it's the old "we trust our HDD, here's the Windows install in a separate partition" then it is possible that has been corrupted as well.
It's also possible it's an MBR virus - try downloading SuperGrub[^] on a known clean PC and booting from that to access the install partition instead of relying on the MBR - I'm slightly sure that was part of the problem I had recently with a friends mothers PC as it all went away after I deliberately overwrote the MBR with a different (and incompatable-with-the-hardware) version of Windows XP.
If you get an email telling you that you can catch Swine Flu from tinned pork then just delete it. It's Spam.

I always following the rebuild from CD method. It's a PC that I built, back in the day so I have all the media I will have a look at SuperGrub. It just after spending the day looking at PC's and electronics it a bus mans holiday to do it at home when not being paid!
