Using ZedGraph with ASP.NET

Web based usage of ZedGraph with ASP.NET

Introduction 

This article will help you get acquainted with Web based usage of Zed Graph. You will be able to use those graphs on your web pages.

Background

As you can't find any built in library for Charting in .NET, you have to use a third party source. What I found free and helpful is -- ZedGraph. 

Using the Code 

You need to reference 2 DLL files:

  1. ZedGraph.dll
  2. ZedGraph.web.dll

Also if want to make your web control visible in the toolbox, you need to create a tab in ToolBox and click Choose Item and then browse for ZedGraph.web.dll. You will get a control in your toolbox. Drag one to your design window.

There do exist several graphs, but I work on the following:

  1. Clustered Column 
  2. Stacked 
  3. Clustered Bar 
  4. Stacked Bar 
  5. Pie 
  6. Line

Add a reference to ZedGraph namespace:

In the properties window, click on event and double click on RenderGraph to create an event for Rendering of Graph. This is where I write my whole code. You need to get the specific pane on which you are going to draw your graph. Following is the code to get that specific GraphPane object:

Once you get the reference to GraphPane object, you can set its X and Y axis title like this:

myPane.XAxis.Title.Text = "X-Axis";
myPane.YAxis.Title.Text = "Y-Axis";

I have used some string and double arrays here to create some static points for drawing graph. String array here is used to create labels on X axis. I don't want to show 1,2,3… for months instead I want to show the name of months on X-axis. That’s why this label array has been created here.

You need to create an object for BarItem. Here we just declare an object:

LineItem has been declared for drawing a line:

I have used switch to set different options for different graphs:

Here I have used AddBar method of GraphPane class. You need to supply a Caption that will be displayed on the legend (I used “Completed” for caption on legend). For vertical bar, you need to give Y values in the form of an array. Each item in the array will be considered as a point. Like here, the first bar is of 80 unit on Y axis and the second is of 50 and so on..

Here a gradient is created and filled inside bar. The first three parameters are color and the fourth one is angle:

This code is the same, but here I have created a red bar. This red bar is adjacent to each blue bar.

For clustered bar and stacked bar, the bar should be horizontal so here I have assigned the double array to X axis rather than Y axis.

     myCurve.Bar.Fill = new Fill(Color.Red, Color.White, Color.Red, 0f);

     break;

A pie chart is created here. The chart fill is set to None to let it empty. After that, the legend’s position has been set using the location property. Legend.Position is set to LegendPos.Float to allow legend to be adjusted according to location supplied. Font size is set afterwards. After this IsHStack is set to false to make the legend appear vertical.

Similar to that of BarItem, you can use PieIt<code>em. Here I created 12 slices, one for each month. The first parameter is the double value, second and third are color and the fourth is angle. The fifth one is the displacement of pie. You can have your pieitem out like a slice of pizza if you use some displacement like 0.2.

There is no obligation to call AxisChange() for manually scaled axes. AxisChange() is only intended to handle auto scaling operations. Call this function anytime you change, add, or remove curve data to ensure that the scale range of the axes are appropriate for the data range. This method calculates a scale minimum, maximum, and step size for each axis based on the current curve data. Only the axis attributes (min, max, step) that are set to auto-range (MinAuto, MaxAuto, MajorStepAuto) will be modified. You must call Invalidate() after calling AxisChange to make sure the display gets updated. This overload of AxisChange just uses the default Graphics instance for the screen. If you have a Graphics instance available from your Windows Form, you should use the AxisChange(Graphics) overload instead.

For line, you need to use AddCurve method and use Xaxis double array for X-axis and x4 for Y-axis. SymbolType is used to create a symbol at a specific point. Here I want no symbol so I used SymbolType.None.

Here I set X-axis scale TextLabel, because I want to show Month name instead of numbers. For vertical bars, the bar base is X and for horizontal bars, the bar base is Y:

Here  MajorTic.IsBetweenLabels is set to false to avoid Tic's between labels:

BarSettings.Type is used to set the type of bar. For clustered bar, it is Cluster and for stack it is Stack. AxisChange is used to handle auto scaling operation:

Points of Interest 

The thing which is appealing while working with chart is the visible appearance of the chart. You feel good while working with code. With change of your parameter diagrams do change.
