I'm just starting to learn. I'm using Web Forms, and am trying to add a table to the Database. For starters it tried to use the WingTipToys DB, (the last tutorial I played with), that was until I removed that solution altogether. I created an Entry in DB Explorer called 'dbo.Customers(Design)' It refuses to save, and refuses to show in DB Explorer.
Also, I played with Web Matrix (I toyed with it earlier), you can populate the DB with initial data. How do I do this with Web Forms.
I've run across this same issue. Few years ago, while trying to use Visual Studio 2005 and the first NET Frameworks ASP.NET samples that shipped at that time. All that stuff about [localserver] ... baffling. To say the least. And especially since the "installer" and the coincident scripts and commandline .exes that own the bin directory weren't even compatible with the shipping specs of that VS version.
Long story short, it's Visual Studio 2010 for me. NET Framework ASP.NET samples gone the way of the wind. VS2010 has it's moments (historically, that is ... upgrades to the "Click-Once" fiasco ... actually MADE it work, thank god, etc) ... where am I ... oh yeah, Database Explorer.
What worked for me was this. Forget about VS2010 and the programmer's nexus to database development for just a few moments. I know, it's hard ... you've got all those wizards telling you that it's easy, right? And all the other vanilla in-the-box things that are gonna help you doo what you want in ... C++ (me), VB.NET (me again, from QBASIC), etc.
Instead, download the SQL Server 2008 Managment Studio Express (R2 sp?) with Advanced Services, install it, and the Book-On-Line that documents IT ALL. And while you're at it, go to codeplex and download the AdventureWorks databases (there must be 10 of these, at least). The BOL breathes volumes of usefulness into the AW samples.
Take a few weeks to do basic things, create tables, create databases, do this, do that; pick a few BOL examples that leverage the "Change COnnnection" button in the SSMSE interface (That Database Explorer outstrips the VS version by miles! And then there's the Object Explorer! Freaking great app, all of it).
Once you "see" how to do what you want in "database" you'll realize that asking questions about SQL is a big waste of time.
While ... downloading the BOL might help to answer the basic "array/matrix/table" conundrum. First glance.

Sounds great, and thanks for showing me that I'm not going insane. Any chance of a link to all this though ?
I have two applications, both asp.net mvc3 projects. Both of them were working fine. But after a while I get the 'resource cannot be found error' if I run them.
Please does any one know what could be the cause of this problem?
I am converting sql stored procedureto sybase . i came crosssome datatypes likedeclare@mask ident declare@type ident declare@startvarchar(max) . Ident and max vachar are not supported in sybase. What will be correct alternative datatype which i can usefor sybase.
In my experience a SQL identity has been an integer which is automatically incremented when a row is inserting into that table. Typically the identity column has been used as the primary key for the table.
Could anyone please help with suggesting the technique that I can follow to achieve the following.
I need to create a drop down form/division.. just like gmail-advance-search-option, where the drop down form pops up on clicking on a link.
Please note that my drop down division content is dynamic, ie must be sent by server dynamically (depending on a parameter which user selects previously).
Detail/example: So lets say user selects the option X and click on the buton/link to collapse the drop-down form. At this time, we should receive the form (belongs to the option X) from the server and client should display it. On click on submit, some search should be perform.
PHP is a must.
Could you please let me know the technique to achieve the same..Ajax/Jquery sounded helpful to me . but i have almost 0 knowledge on them . . . . An example or link would be highly appreciated.
Sorry if it sounds basic I am a new bee to web development.

I am used to writing code in MFC/CPP(visual studio 97,which has excelent support facilities),and am trying to start a web app in MVC. Where do I find a reference about what is stored in each directory or File.Where do I find a reference about how it fits together. I do not want more tutorials about how to do things, but an overview of how this all fits together. Surely, Microsoft had a design spec readible to humans, when they wrote all this. Where do I find this level of info.
Basic things, like What's the difference between a 'Project', 'WebSite'or 'Solution'
