You know, whenever I visit a site that has a great forum (for example, OSR Online Developers Forum[^], or, Sysinternals Development Forum[^]), I'm inclined to think,...why doesn't someone compile a GREATEST HITS collection that automatically queries the database with each new question, using a Google-like method, displaying relevant associated topics? It would read in similar style to Raymond Chen's The Old New Thing[^]

I think that there should be a special web form for posting questions under programming forums, including the problem description and "what I have tried" fields that are filled out separately by the member who's giving a question.

Also, I would recommend that a primitive online translator from some languages other than English, as well as a spell-checker is integrated into forum's moderation tools, so that moderators would easily translate those confusing and hardly understood texts into English and know what these text are about.

I believe that's called mind reading. Good luck finding a good one who is fluent in two or more spoken languages, plus a few programming languages. They would need all of the foregoing skills.

I completely agree with you, but anyway, the using of translators and spellcheckers might provide a sufficient help in reading posts written in the other languages.
For example, I often post various technical questions under software.intel.com programming forums. In many cases, under these forums, I post my questions in Ukrainian, which is my native language, and after that receive various replies posted by English-speaking persons in the same Ukrainian language. Of course, the people from Intel use embedded translators to quickly interpret posts into English for the correct understanding it.

Undoubtedly translators and spelling checkers would help. My point was simply that they are insufficient by themselves.

From one respect, I entirely agree with you as I've already explained in my previous posts. In this case, there's the only way is that these posts containing incomplete programming questions must be removed by forum's moderators.

I like the fact that some of the forums are shared between the C++/.NET, Java, and LAMP sites, but is there a way to indicate which forums are shared?

Can you stop re-posting this like this and perhaps try emailing Chris directly? Whether you post it once or a dozen times, it's still one guy who's going to decide whether to help you out or not, so it is perhaps sensible not to try and annoy him by spamming his forums

If you're browsing through the Q/A forums and read an answer that's correct for the question, should you vote "helpful answer"? I usually do, but then I started thinking that maybe the person asking the question didn't think it was helpful to them.
No big deal. I just didn't want people that are trying to help to think the OP thought it was helpful when it was just someone else entirely.
Maybe a different "flag" if the OP votes it useful to them? Many (most) don't bother, but it would be nice if the person answering knew that their response(s) did help. Maybe a gold star or thank you icon next to the answer?

Design. MVP status for LAMP and Java will be assigned at the end of the year based on articles that appear on those sites and participation in forums on that site. Allows us to award those members who are, say, strong in PHP but may not be as strong in the C++/.NET arena

I never understood the special handling of non-Microsoft technology.
Why can't you have Java, PHP, Apache, MySQL, etc be treated just like everything else,
i.e. give them their forums alongside all the other forums.
That way, you would share users, MVPs, lounge, suggestions & bugs forum, etc etc.
And save a lot of code and trouble.
And keep things simple.
And get an easy way to search it all.
And avoid questions like this one, and the one above it (by Scott).

The sites already share users (at least the .NET and LAMP sites do, the Java site doesn't but it's supposed to). And they also already share some forums. (As you mentioned in reference to question[^].
I actually don't mind having the sites separate for a couple of reasons:
1. I don't have to sort/filter articles and messages based on technology.
2. Many people don't have experience/expertise across technologies and/or platforms.

I do. I'm a C# proigrammer. I occasionally use other languages such as VB.NET and Java.
I don't see why these languages get treated completely differently: for VB.NET I just go to
another forum, for Java I am supposed to visit a similar but different site alltogether.
I would prefer Chris and staff spend their time in improving the site's functionality, rather
than duplicating and debugging again lots of stuff.
A good filter, user selectable, conttolled through "my settings", would allow users to only see
what they are interested in; a single merged site (and really functional search facilities) would
offer the possibility to search everything in a single go, again subject to a handy filter system.

The reason is because we have 5 million users and 9 years of history overshadowing everything. We want new LAMP and Java sites to start with their own quirks and idiosynchrocies and we want members there to be able to express their views without worrying about the heavy Microsoft contigent.
We've debated this internally a lot over the last few years and want to give the Java and LAMP sites a chance to be themselves. If we make it all once big site from the outset then we'll never be able to go back. But if we try it this way first then at least we can see what happens.
