But LANtastic didn't exist in the mid 1970s, several years before the IBM PC, did it?

One point that could be stressed a lot more, though: The Ethernet name is 50 years old. Practically every single element of the Ethernet technology of the 1970s have been replaced, from cabling and plugs to topology to signaling - some of them several times over those 50 years.

Ethernet is an excellent example of how developers use a well known and recognized name for an older technology as sales pitch for a new and quite different technology that might have difficulties capturing the market if it were marketed under a different name and as a new technology.

(Another example of selling a new technology under an old name is USB: USB 1.x was a quite different animal from USB 2.x; they had very little in common beyond the cable and the bottom level frame header making it possible for them to run on the same cable. USB 3.x was unable to repeat that trick, so it lets USB 1.x/2.x run on separate connectors wrapped into the same cable. USB 3 is a completely new standard - even the plugs are new!)
