But in my case I can know the number of items only after all the rows have been added. So I don't understand how I can use your solution.thanks

I already tried that. in this case it returns all the rows if I pick a date which is present in the database whereas it is supposed to return only one row. if i pick a date which is not present in the database it displays the message ' no record exists' .

@CPAllini i already have a database..i was not sure about using the database since i would have to create a table just to store one value.
the admin should be able to change the timer's interval property anytime he wishes to. Also i have no idea about your lightweight solution. Some help will be appreciated. thanks.

I tried to follow your instructions and this is my code now.
Dim str As String
str = "SELECT * FROM Login WHERE username= @txtUsername.Text & password = @txtPassword.Text"
Dim cmd As OleDbCommand = New OleDbCommand(str, DBconnection)
dr = cmd.ExecuteReader
If dr.HasRows Then
MsgBox("successfull")
Else
MsgBox("sorry")
End If
'dr' is a datareader declared in my module
i get an error associated with the line "dr = cmd.ExecuteReader"
the error is "No value given for one or more required parameters."

thanks...i combined the two statements into one single statement
'Dim myConnection As New OleDb.OleDbConnection' and 'myConnection = New OleDb.OleDbConnection(conString)' into
' Public myConnection As New OleDb.OleDbConnection(connString)'
i dont get any error in this case.
i do however have more doubts.
is sub a better way than function to open a connection?

OK i moved the lines out of the function but i get an error with this line..
myConnection = New OleDb.OleDbConnection(conString). the error is 'declaration expected'
