You've got the wrong impression, there was no disrespect whatsoever. I was merely stating the fact that your comment didn't answer what I asked. Thanks for taking the time and trouble. I assumed you intended to post the following code
void function()
{
flag = 1; // this is global
while (flag); // this waits for another thread to clear it
// do something here
}
In my case, it is GetModuleHandle's behavior that I was not sure about.

Yes, of course, this is *inside* the DLL, so it doesn't get called in the first place unless the DLL itself is loaded.

Your code misses the point. (BTW global_variable's value is undefined on entry, so it may or may not enter the loop in the first place. I suppose you meant to initialize it before the loop?)
The code I posted has a potential infinite loop, and I was not clear on what MSDN doesn't say...

That's what I was going to do, but thought there may be some obscure reason for doing this, maybe for some old OS. I really don't want to touch any more than necessary...

I forgot to mention that the signal is more or less periodic, and ultimately I'm calculating the average frequency. I'll update the question.
backspace backspace... I didn't forget, the question already said periodic signal... though the comment above is a more precise description.

OK, you may be on to something after all. Maybe I can use the average signal and count how many times the peaks vary from it. Let me think about it while waiting for more answers...
Indivara
24-Feb-12 20:14pm

Like zero-crossings? That doesn't work because the level isn't constant, the entire thing shifts up and down, an sometimes there may not even be a recognizable pulse. The peak levels also vary with time.

Oh you meant the comment! I deleted that when I tried it. I hate those things, they really are a pain when writing comments in languages other than English. At least UTF8 has made things better.

Reply to your comment -
That can be done in many ways
- use a property in the login form, access it from the main window after the form closes
- set the DialogResult property (inherited from System.Windows.Form) to a value indicating success or failure
- a callback (event) registered on the login form class by the main window
etc

From a complete layman's viewpoint -
- You need to explain briefly
(a) what gSOAP is, and
(b) why this tip is important
- The formatting is messed up, look at the meaningless tags. You need to escape the angle brackets, or they get interpreted as html
- The download link should be a web page, not a direct link to a file (that may change). The link is not a link, you should use a hyperlink rather than a pre tag to format it.

That may be so, but we couldn't possible comment based on the code fragment. Debug it further, put the address of data[] in the memory window (the one that allows you to monitor the memory contents), and see how it changes as you step through.

'.' is the debugger's interpretation of the value 255. As I said in the answer, the value is of no concern here. What matters is that you are reading from an invalid memory location (memory not allocated by your program)

Well there's no simple answer to that. Connectionless and connection oriented apply to the communication protocol, not the device itself. The same device may use multiple protocols (for different tasks), so it can be either or both.

Did you solve this yet? Can you actually write to the path mentioned? Check the security settings on the shared folder (there are two places to set, share settings and security tab)
Is this with the easy method, or using impersonation? Log on to the server (where the app runs) and create a file in the shared folder, it will give you an idea of what is happening.
Oh and ignore the pressure to "finish it today", that only makes things worse.
Good luck...

A proper fix will take me some time to figure out, if you want a quick and dirty fix, grant full access to "Everyone" (group) to some particular shared folder, and get the web application to save there. Absolutely no security, not recommended. Maybe somebody else can help with a better method. See updated answer above for details

I didn't mean a visually appealing demo, just a downloadable solution for lazy programmers (like me :)). I finally converted this to a project and stepped through it, your examples are perfectly adequate, rather brilliant to my inexperienced eye.
Maybe we should ask Chris for a tip-to-article upgrade feature.

So can't you call the command line versions of the tools executed? It doesn't matter that your application has a GUI.
I don't see how to get the time of completion unless the tool actually terminates. I suppose you want all of this automated (run everything without user intervention?)
Indivara

OK, I misunderstood, since you said you want to know when the process completed (I assumed you meant terminated)
Is it only chkdsk? Can't you make it terminate once its task is done? (to my knowledge, the command line version of chkdsk terminates after checking the disk)
Can't think of a simple way of getting the progress, maybe you can parse its output and locate the percentage?

Just tried it on Vista, you're right, it is optional now (used to be required on XP and prior). Default appears to be 1 minute.
You can abort the command if you change your mind: shutdown -a

Doesn't it require the -t option as well? like shutdown -s -t 0 -f -m \\yadayada (shutdown immediately, killing everything in the process)
(BTW yadayada can be the host name as well as the IP address)

Why not use if - else if - else if ...? You won't need to break that way. I generally dislike unconditional loops like that. What's more, if the method is long enough to require this sort if thing, it can generally be broken up more (unless performance is sacrificed)
