... I worked after the family was asleep (from about 11pm to 2am), so I'm not missing out on anything other than a good night's sleep; which I've not had since ... oh ... my second daughter was born a year ago ... but I'm not complaining at all!

We work for overtime, because we have a very tight deadlines for that we need to do like this.

Hello,
Do you have to do this very often? If so, you might consider a job-change or hire a better management..

Bob I'm with you on this matter. Sounds like a new Project manager is in need!

I hacked pretty much non-stop (10+ hrs per day) over the holidays, but on my own stuff. Does that count as "work"?

I was off from the 23rd until the 3rd. Wish I had worked though, missed being able to do coding and being around computers.

After more than 15 years, I've concluded that there's nothing in the office that won't be there when I return. My kids are only small once.

Too true, I'm pretty much in the same situation, it's actually fun enjoying Christmas rather going into work *thinking* you might miss something. Long nights and weeking coding are a thing of the past, and it seems I not missing anything.

Family/kids first, yes, and here's wild idea: ME first.
I'm 21 years into doing this. I still have my moments when I can't drag myself away and my husband has to call me and remind me to come home. I don't work at home. I still learn rabidly and try to new and interesting approaches just to keep it interesting. I have the freedom to do this because I work in a shop with mostly old HW engineers, who still know nothing about SW, despite my years of repeating things over and over. That is a blessing and a curse. Curse: I'm always explaining things. Blessing: I can do what I want to keep it fun.
Sorry to rattle on. It is a revelation to me now with 2 small kids that I am not defined (completely) by what I do during the day. Which is a good thing.
Happy New Year.
Suz.

Yup, same here.
After recently finishing a brutal project, took the week off between XMas and NY to spend with the kids, who are out of school.
Spent a few hours looking over new concepts, but nothing related to work.

I worked Christmas, but took vacation time afterwards to have my wisdom teeth removed. Didn’t stop me from being productive; got a slew of features completed and managed to make a few wooden shelves (they still need to be stained) for family members.
It was strange having New Years off, didn’t really know what to do with my self. The girlfriend ended up forcing me to go out.

I got up early this morning (1/2/2006), drove down to the train station, and there were no cars in the parking lot. Wondering why, I flipped on the radio and realized that today is a US holiday. Ugh! Went back home and slept 3 more hours...
Ever had a bug that fixed itself? I hate those!

That sounds like some thing I would do. In 2003 I did not know I was a year older until two days after my birthday.

While working on my own I certainly didn't have a choice as customers require results "during next week" regardless of christmas...

I live in a place where my new year will start later! But I selected 'Yes, I work' because I have to do work every new year! or other holidays!!
I think at least you get somethings!
Where I live I earn 2.5$ per hour from programming by Visual c++ (if there is any work at all!!), but I do that because I love it! and it's necessary to live alive! I sometimes think of moving to another country, but without mony or a job it'll be more difficault, I think.
Well, this is the life, and I accept it, however try every second to make a better one
//This is not a signature
while (I'm_alive) {
printf("I Love Programming");

But I did not work during the holidays season here.
As for you, Hamed, you may raise the following questions:
1. How is the pay in your country in respect to other people?
2. How is your pay in respect to your total costs?
This may not be true for Iran, but Indian people make about 1/3 of what engineers make here in Israel, but they get to live in India in much higher standards than us here, because everything is much much cheaper than here (more than 1/3 cheaper, that is). With their available income they have a higher purchase power.
I'll be glad to hear more about the situation in Iran... And I hope you get to find a new place if you feel bad there.

Hi,
Nadav wrote : 1. How is the pay in your country in respect to other people?
It depnds! if you have a free job or employed by the government(!) and a lot of other if's...(I'm too shy to say them publically, if you read your mail, tell me so I'll mail them.)
Those who are employed (depending to their position) will earn from 500 $ per month up to 15,000(not published formally) $ per month(!!!!) . With a Free job (independent of the government) you have to try much harder and if you want to be employed you should go to army for 2 years first (if you are a man)( and I'm not going to waste my time with such a hell!! Army in Iran is really... ).
Nadav wrote : 2. How is your pay in respect to your total costs?
Very bad! A usual house will 2 rooms around 100 Meter, costs me 20,000 - 60,000 $ A car say 'Peugeot 405 GLX' will cost 12,000 $, for My computer I paied 600$. 1 KG of mince meat=(4-5)$. I think this is enough!!
Finally: 2.5 $ is good, In fact I work for 0.5 $ - 2.5 $. It again depends to the job and I earn very good comparing to my friends!! Operators who work with my Applications are fully satisfied , and that's what give me energy!

We say "get a life" to each other, disappointed or jokingly. What we forget, though, is that this is possibly the most destructive advice you can give to a geek.
