Close-Loop Anesthesia Machines, Remote Gas Monitors, Pulse Oximiters, Cataract Eye Surgery and Robotics, etc.
But have not done that in a long time. Mostly now it's industrial automation - SCADA, HMI, MES, etc.

The most favorite platform for most of us, and soon to be favorite platform for everyone is not even mentioned.
This is totally not-fair. Or maybe this was a favorite sub-.NET framework; because now a days .NET covers them all.

Options are based on target platform not on development environment.
May be they could have changed the survey question a bit.

I am surprised to see that in 2015 also traditional desktop application developers are more than web application developers.

Thing is that it is a small sample space. If there is more despondence there could be a change. Still there are some desk top aps that would not be suited to web.

"Web" is unreliable at best. "Web" is in the hands of the providers, who can slow connections to a crawl, make people pay more and more for the same services and leave them without connection for weeks. Definitely it happens in any place which is not the centre of a big European or American city - practically the vast majoriti of the world.
I had broadband access last year - before no web, no internet, nothing, not even the phone. 60% of Italian people do not have broadband Internet access, and in Italy brodadband means 640 kbps ADSL.
And it is not only Italy: many many more countries lay in the same or even worst conditions. even our best providers, who boast 100 Mbps connections, reach only 5% of population and they have prices on the range of 100 €/month - an engineer with 15 years experience earns 1600. Also they're not reliable at all.
So yes, traditional desktop applications may live on an offline support, not needing sniffable, shapeable, sabotable, costly and unreliable network.

I am not surprised. Why do we HAVE to be connected just to write a small document or perform a simple calculation? For me a stand alone solution is best unless there is an overarching reason for being connected.
I may not last forever but the mess I leave behind certainly will.

I was thinking exactly the same. Where were tablets and phones?

The MOST interesting, let's pick five... Unless they're are five equally MOST interesting of course, but I doubt that.
Heck, why stop at five? Check ALL the things!
Also, CListCtrl, Bacon and Salma Hayek, as I haven't seen them mentioned yet.

Either that, or you change "What's" to 'What', 'the' to 'are' and 'platform' to 'platform(s)'.

We know, now a days computer applications are not just limited to desktop applications but it is widely spread among different browsers, devices, smart phones, iPad, iPhone etc. but still there exist lot of old softwares which was developed under desktop applications and now want to move to web based interface or to some smart devices
So Again we need to work on....Traditional desktop applications to repaint them.

koolprasad2003 wrote: softwares which was developed under desktop applications and now want to move to web based interface or to some smart devices No. Most of these applications would rather die then end up as a tiny rectangle on a small screen - and most of there purpose reduced to whatever fits in a tweet.

I need to comment too. I've heard ofter, hey *most* desktop apps should move to web...
and like desktop development should *die out*...
This really makes no sense for me:
-why require your app to be used from internet?
-what about security concerns when data is online?
-desktop applications just have different UI/and different feel when interacting with them
So I don't see how web applications can replace desktop applications.
