It didn't hit me until this morning, but you made you Shadowed property Public. Change it to Private and it might solve your problem.

I tried it. It actually got more confusion. The property is still available in Intellisense, it calls something that I can't even tell. I assume it calls the property in the parent class, but it doesn't seem to change the behavior of the control.

Connect from DataGrid to Detail

I am trying to move from a DataGrid to a new form that presents me with the information selected from the grid for updataing of a record. On the DataGrid I present a name and customer number. From there I can select a specific customer and then want to move to a form where the remaining information is presented to me for that specific customer (ie the 7th row on the grid) and allows me to change the information then return to the grid. I've tried a few things and have been unsuccessful so far.

How about using a detail form that accepts a customer id as a queryString parameter?

http://localhost/myApp/myDetailForm.aspx?id=xxxx

The detail form could present itself as a data entry form for a new record if the id parameter is not present, or an update form querying the db for data on customer id=xxxx and presenting it.

Then use a TemplateColumn in your datagrid with a data binding expression to construct a hyperlink to the detail form, supplying the id.

Just one idea.

In simple methods, you can't. Reason being is you can't get a reference to memory that sits outside your process without going thru elaborate means to do it. I remember seeing something similar about three or four years ago in a kind of debugger app, but it involved using a .DLL injected into the target apps process.

What are you looking to do? There may be another method to get it accomplished...

Hi everybody.

As a computer science major I've chosen to focus on programming. More specifically, VB.NET and C#. Is this a good place to ask some very basic questions?

Here is my first one:

When writing functions and subs, is there some sort of 'rule of thumb' that says when a separate class should be used instead of simply including it all in one .vb file?

My rule is,

Each class should have it's own file... unless the class is a data container class relating to the first class. This way you know that MainForm.vb contains the MainForm class etc

But of course I'm an old school C++ programmer, maybe VB'ers do it differently.

The Control key[^] is 11 or VK_CONTROL not 17. Hope this helps. Smile | :)

[edit] Sorry, I just realised 11 is 17 in Hex. It's Friday and my mind's in low gear. If 11 doesn't work try &H11 or just use VK_CONTROL[/edit]

Are you sending the paste to a specific app? If so, why not use SendKeys "^V"? It will do the exact same thing...

What i want to do is a background process getting notified of
system messages, such as WM_APPACTIVATE and get a reference
or an handle of activated process/app.

I had some bad experience with NativeWindow class, i think i've
not completely got all the triks it offers.

Could you suggest any solution?

OK. First, there is no WM_APPACTIVATE message. The closest match to what your looking for is WM_ACTIVATE. It is sent once to two windows. First, to the window being deactivated, then to the window being activated. The WPARAM part of the message contains the details of the ACTIVATE command and the LPARAM part will contain the handle of the window being activated or deactivated and, strangely enough, CAN BE NULL! Full details on the WM_ACTIVE message are here[^].

Second, the WM_ACTIVATE message is NOT broadcast to the entire system. In order to get your hands on that message your going to have to write a CBT Hook. With this you'll get notified of all Activate, Create, Destroy, Minimize, Maximize, Move, and Size messages going to any window, along with a bunch of other things. I'm saying this because you're hook routine is going to have to pick out the messages you want, do any processing you want, and then send the message down the hook chain quickly and efficiently or else you'll degrade system performance.

The top of the Windows Hooks documentation starts here[^], and the docs for writing a CBTProc hook function are here[^]. If your not familiar with writing Windows Hook functions, it's going to be a bit confusing to read at first. You might want to start with the basics of how Windows Messaging works, and that is here[^].
