Git allows groups of people to work on the same documents (often code) at the same time, and without stepping on each other's toes. It's a distributed version control system.

Knowing that Git is not the only one: you have Bazaar and Mercurial too for instance, as well as SVK (to some extent I agree). My favorite remains Git though.

I find this interesting and always wanted to learn git, i can't find a motive to downvote this post, so i give you a 5.

I don't know about the stepping on each other's toes bit. At the end of the day, if the project is not well planned and several people have modified the same file, it comes down to a merge. Sometimes this is easy and can be automated. Sometimes, it is very complex: that is when the toe stepping starts. It is the same in every source code control system and GIT is no different from the rest. It is a problem that has been there since source code control systems began.

I’m quite a fan of .NET and have found it great to develop with since moving away from PHP in the early days of my career. With its great tools, large community and broad applicability (mobile, Xbox, desktop and Web) it’s both powerful and fun. Let’s be honest, though. I’m probably already playing devil’s advocate. So, let’s see if I can convince you, a seasoned non-.NET developer, to try it out. If you’re already a .NET developer, you might still find something new in the code sample, so I urge you to take a look. Plus: is Mono really an option?

Stop thinking of startup ideas to build and instead think of problems to solve. Young founders such as myself are notoriously challenged with discovering ripe problems in the world because we don’t have much real world experience. Where do you begin to look for problems? Ask yourself the questions: What do I want to make absurd two years from now? What products can I not live without? We build a better mousetrap because mice are still a problem.

PHP is still the easiest language to learn for non-technical people: it allows anyone to create dynamic websites faster than with any other technologies, it allows anyone to host websites cheaply and without any hassles. PHP is probably not the best designed language in the world, but it lets you get things done, and you can't argue with that. PHP is probably not the best language out there, but PHP is the best web platform... ever.

I don’t like JavaScript. I write an enormous amount of JavaScript — in fact I write it almost exclusively — but I don’t really like it as a language. I don’t want to write a giant screed as to why I don’t like the language, but suffice it to say that it lacks some really basic features, and its lack of clearly defined rules create lots of headaches. Something that has helped me keep JavaScript manageable and even fun is the coding styles I have developed. I write code that is boring, because boring code is readable code.

We have entered an era when the developer may not be king but the developer has an equally if not more important role in that they will be the ones to decide which platform gets the best apps and the market seems to have dictated that the platform with the best and the most apps is the one that shall win. By combining the core of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8, Microsoft is creating a foundation that may unleash such power that, past October, we may see a Windows Phone platform on the ascendancy at a faster rate than the other platform. If you make it easy to build apps, they will come.

I don't think you're 100% correct on this...Windows platforms for mobile have suffered much in the past! The reason for this is the lack of availability of awesome apps! The same thing goes for RIM's Blackberry device! The cool and fun factors are missing key elements! It is quite an embarassment for Microsoft quite honestly (I myself being an original Msoft dev who has moved on since then and I still continue to hope they will reinvent themselves into something cool!) Microsoft is the 300 pound gorilla in the room with the geeky devs that work really hard to lock you outside of their OS internals with cumbersome logic and updates that seem like a brick wall to a developer. Apple, same thing! Think about this for a moment! Why is Android so successful? Huh? Bet you cannot answer that! The reason is because they open up the box! You can tweek it whichever way you like, the OS is free and portable to any device! If you wish to write your own driver on the opensource platform you can and you don't have to spend an arm and a leg to do it! The only saving grace for microsoft and I hope they read my posting, is to create a new OS that is opensource and does not look like Windows XP, XP Embedded or any costly OS implementation! I have no idea why in god's name they just don't jump on opensource like everyone else! They are going to loose in this game if they don't do something quickly and with the economy in the tank worldwide, they are wasting money even creating their own tablet regardless how cool it looks and the fact it has a keyboard! Do you for a moment think that Google will not come out with a keyboard for the next Nexus device? Cmon...None of this stuff impresses the end user! Its the cool apps that give it the awesome factor! I doubt that the 3rd wheel on this date, Msoft will rise above the other two market share dominants, Android and IOS doing the same old thing! They made the X-box a success after it being a complete failure in the beginning and they lost billions, I would love to see them rise to the occasion, so that I can have something to develop for on their platform also! I just doubt that greedy can also be smart!

This is an amazing gadget. I started programming on Radio-86RK in machine code typing in the Monitor. Same here. Also, the issue of the magazine, which GMC-4 is bundled with, according to illustrations (unfortunately, I don’t read Japanese), is dedicated to the history of microprocessors starting from Intel 4004. Then there is a dozen of code examples and projects using GMC-4. Beautiful! DIY FTW!

Microsoft Office 13 was seen in an image of Windows RT pre-RTM build revealing the Office 13’s icons for Excel, Word, PowerPoint and OneNote. Interestingly, the Office apps are named as Word 15, Excel 15, PowerPoint 15 and OneNote 15 while we already know that it is code named as Office 13 by Microsoft. The image also reveals the build number of Windows RT Pre-RTM which is a bit older with compile date of June 11, 2012.

Office 15 is internal code name for the next version of Office. For instance, Office 2010 was internally called Office 14, and Office 2007 was Office 12 (yes, there is no Office 13  ). As for the final name for Office 15, it has not been published yet, but it is more likely to be Office 2013 than Office 13.

HELSINKI: A new operating system for mobile phones akin to the Mozilla Firefox internet browser has got the backing of several major telecom companies, turning up the heat on Google and Apple in the smartphone market.
Mozilla said on Monday that mobile network operators Deutsche Telekom, Sprint, Smart, Telecom Italia , Telenor and Etisalat are backing the Firefox platform.
The non-profit organisation which evolved from Netscape after the internet browser wars 14 years ago, said phone makers ZTE and TCL Communication Technology will roll out the first Firefox OS phones using Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors in early 2013.
