What I always thought was rediculous was that the language ended up being the one used to embed in HTML, and it was not even well designed for that since it uses HTML reserved symbols. Could have just about used any language.

Too Little Too Late. I do not think Microsoft will have a Windows 9, in the sense that the number will not be used in marketing. I would not be surprised if the word windows disappears totally from name. Hopefully when they release the next desktop environment they will have learned. Also the Metro style was out of date before Windows 8 was released.

Metro works fine on phones, desktops less so (IMO).
What I'm curious about is whether there's an internal (to the Windows org) group trying to ensure that Azure isn't successful. If it (and Office 365) continues to grow as it has, why would anyone need a new local OS every few years?

Does it still run fine when there are no "serious" apps to run? 
My laptop broke last week and I was about to buy a Sony Vaio Duo hybrid, to use both desktop apps and mobile apps on the go. Then decided against it after doing a few searches on "Metro" store. Also dualbooting Android x86 and Windows 8 x64 isn't an option ATM, and Bluestacks is propriatry and don't make it easy to upgrade the Android kernel that it runs.
Instead, just upgraded my old SGS1 to SGS4, and installed chrooted Debian. Guess I'll wait for an Android/Ubuntu hybrid tablet/laptop to replace my broken laptop

Even so, from what I can tell Windows phones have not done so well in the market places. From what I can tell the only Microsoft phones that were considered good are the silverlight versions, and the Windows team seems to have managed to get Silverlight killed (I am making an assumption here).

WP7/8 use an XAML variant for their UI similar to WPF and Silverblight; but AFAIK the latter itself has never ran on a mobile device. Also the trend over the last few quarters has seen windows phone bottom out and begin climbing in global market share; boosting Nokia past the RIMdenberg[^]. The longer term question is if MS/Nokia are able to capitalize on WP8 performing better than Android on sub $200 (without a contract) phones which is driving sales in the developing world into a growing share of those countries higher end market segments or make any progress against the iOS/Android duopoly in the rich world.

One of the tasks that I found cumbersome when writing JavaScript is simple collection manipulation. I have gotten spoiled in C# with LINQ. Sorting, filtering, shaping and more is easy with LINQ but what about in JavaScript? It's a bird, it's a plane, it's Underscore.js!

One of the reasons I do not think JS will take over. Future is going more towards tools like Linq and further from traditional C++ type languages (C#, Java, C++)

Microsoft is in a tough spot. Windows RT is all but dead in the water. But Microsoft has approximately a zillion and a half Surface RT tablets collecting dust in warehouses. "I can't take him like that. It's against regulations."

No - I only use Ubuntu for things I have to use it for, otherwise I strive to get the Ruby on Rails projects that I'm working on to actually run natively in Windows - it's SUCH a nicer OS to work with, and the RubyMine IDE looks SO much better in Windows. I'm going to blog about that at some point!

It's actually yet another TLA called "BDD" - behavior driven development. Ruby on Rails, besides having good unit testing capability, has awesome capability for doing integration testing - basically, the "behavior" of the website.

There has been some noise recently about a presentation at Black Hat 2013 entitled "Preparing for the Cryptopocalypse". Based on some recent research by Antoine Joux et al., the speakers argued that we should be prepared for the day when RSA is announced to be broken. Personally, I'm not so worried. "When should we worry? If there's any hint of this work being extended to apply to prime fields."
