C++ is already at least 7 versions old (Visual C++ is not a language, but a vendor's version of C++).
VB 6 was inordinately successful.
Java 6 was quite successful too.
He seems too keen to manipulate the facts to fit his theory. I expect better from DDJ.

In a Weibo posting today, Microsoft China asked "Microsoft’s latest OS Windows 9 is coming soon, do you think the start menu at the left bottom will make a come back?" Sure, but what do they know? I have it on good authority that Windows 9 doesn't exist.

If you’re reading this, there’s a better than 90% chance you’ve seen “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” If so, you’re familiar with the Holodeck: a room where 3D interactive worlds can be generated for users. We’re nowhere near those 3D projected light objects, but we are getting remarkably close to the ability to make a room look like just about anything needed. I'm a sucker for a Star Trek reference...
