I work a lot with specialized hardware and often have to go in the workshop to test on the complete machines so I couldn't but I really wish I could. It would save me 130€ / month and 3 hours/day.

Do they know the root cause yet? I mean, I know it's the battery, but is it the type, the wiring, a bad chipset (related to charging), circuit drawing too much power and overheating, bad phone design (trapping heat with battery compartment)?
I'm kind of wondering why this hasn't happened more (other manufacturers) and on more samsung phones.

Probably because it's happened early and people quitted using it rather quickly.
Maybe they changed the design especially for Note 7, those things are BIG.

I'm wondering too, if maybe it isn't Samsung's fault entirely.
Maybe they will find there is a chip in the battery circuit that came from certain production runs which isn't rated for expected current (due to bad QA) and then on those phones, they melt down.
That would be really unfortunate for Samsung. Hopefully, we'll hear more about a root cause, but often we do not.

They hadn't issued a return call for certain batch numbers so it's probably a design issue. Thin hardware means less heat dissipation, while a big screen produces a lot of heat. Couple that with powerful processor and maybe a strong battery, so they thought they could have longer usage of high CPU power, and thin copper to save costs...
First edition Fiat Stilo caught fire when parked because the engine cooling fan was activated even with switched off car. Since there was as few copper as they could afford after 3-4 hours of functioning the circuit caught fire. Only in the concessionary my dad was working for six cars burned down in a week.

Probably a construction error, the heat pipe from the charging circuit goes next to the battery, and with Quickcharge it gets hot.

Thanks for chiming in. Interesting details. You'd think this would all be at the forefront of design knowing that they are pushing the limits of heat dissipation in such a small area. But, there are many factors when designing / developing. Probably indicates that there wasn't a lot of extreme QA.

We'll probably never find out. Korean companies aren't known for their transparancy and besides they probably want to forget about this sorry episode and put it behind them as soon as they can.

Perhaps it is running an infinite loop in the background.
One of my online teachers had told a joke about a processor manufacturer, about 25 years ago, who had a tagline - 'Our processor is so fast that it will run an infinite loop in two and a half minutes'. Well, the reality was that when you ran an infinite loop program on it, the processor would get so hot, that in precisely two and a half minutes, it would catch fire and melt.

It has been a busy few weeks for the big tech companies making major announcements and we're not done yet. Microsoft announced today that it will host a Windows 10 event October 26th in New York City at 10:00 AM ET. I assume this means Apple will have an event on the 24th?

While the price information is probably correct: [^], I can tell you from personal direct knowledge of Thailand that:
1. The iPhone 7 is not due to be officially released here until October 21, according to the Thailand Apple site, and AppleInsider.com; other sites here mention dates in September: go figure.
2. The price will probably be higher than that shown in the article; for the first month, I'd estimate at least 20% higher, as well as having low availability; I have no doubt supplies will be kept limited in the first month or so to harvest the gotta-buy-it wealthy set.
3. The figure quoted of a daily income of 2.4 US $ per hour (at 40 hrs. per week that would work out to about 384 US $ per month, or so ... about 13.5k baht per month) for Thailand would translate into a demographic that would start in the middle-class, and go up. Many bright young Thais with education are working for 8~12 k baht per month, more in the major cities; but, in the major cities cost of living is much higher. An unskilled day laborer here might make 300 baht per day (less than 10 US$), 400 baht if lucky.
Assuming the iPhone 7 128k is at least 50k baht at launch, and an income (high) of 20k baht per month, with cost of living at least 12k per month: do the math, and you'll see its preposterous to think that anyone who is not wealthy is going to be able to buy an iPhone 7 with 129 days of labor.
Given the questions I have about the accuracy of this hypothesized cost in Thailand, I am inclined to suspect the other figures quoted are also "optimistic."
However, yes, lots of young Thais are going to get one of these new wonders by hook, crook, tapping family, purchase plans with sky-high interest rates from wherever, purchase plans from phone companies where the ultimate total cost of ownership over some number of years will reach the stratosphere. Worst case: illegal loan-sharks who play rough if the cash is not forthcoming, and, of course, jacked-up interest rates.
And the hi-so's here, oh yeah, they'll have one. Other folks, within a few months will have the clones made by the wizards of Guangzhou which will have nice looking facades over their Android innards; these become much more difficult to get under the current government, but Vientiane Laos is full them, and they are sold "under the table" in the mega-malls in Bangkok.
but, I will not have one, that's for sure. Apple: no like. Mobile phone: no like. I do have the cheapest model Samsung with no camera, no internet access. Home phone: no have.

All I can say is that anyone stupid enough to spend half a year's income on a freaking phone deserves what they get.
In Israel, the price for an iPhone 7 128GB ranges from NIS 4,850 to NIS 5,500, which is about 50-60% of the average monthly income. Even that sum should, IMO, make people think twice about buying such a mobile (== easy to steal) device.
If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.
