What I meant is that I'm sure they were at a locked in price.

You don't stock pile? Does ammunition have a limited shelf life?

But it's a zombie apocalypse, one can not prepare for an apocalypse.

Stock pile? Most shooters maintain enough ammo for SHTF (I have 14 30-round mags that are full and in bandoliers), and then 4-10x that for practice. When ammo is readily available, I buy 1000 rounds after a day at the range. My days at the range are now comprised of shooting 20-40 rounds instead off the usual 200-300.

Not if it's stored properly (cool/dry place). I have some 56-year-old .30-30 ammo that still works just fine.

There are lots of people now selling off their stockpile from the last Obama election ammo shortage on gunbroker.com. The prices are crazy. Like $450 for a thousand rounds of 762. Sure, that's at least twice the price it should be, you can still get them.
Heck even old rifles are commanding a premium. Few years ago you could get an SKS for just over $100. Now they are going for $500-$600. It's a mad house!

Hmmm... sooo... if there's an ammo shortage, prices on guns should decrease?

people must be stocking up bigtime with Obama's talk on gun control.

Curiously, what the dealers are telling me is that the components to manufacture ammo are being purchased and hoarded by the US government, particularly powder and primers. Interesting, and difficult to prove...

Curiously, I ran across the same article a couple of hours ago. I have no idea how credible the source might be, though.

"Current trends could find the federal government with a strong ammunition advantage over local police and sheriff departments."
What, so when they shoot it out, the feds will win?
WTF kind of point is that cretin trying to make?

Given the ubiquitous nature of the ammo used by the feds (.40, 9mm, .45acp, 5.56, and .308), and given the nature of the propensity of civilian-owned firearms in those same calibers, I figure there would be a lot of "kill/scarf" going on. The dead guy automatically gives up his weapon(s) and ammo.

No, I didn't. Looks like they have some stock, and the price isn't too bad. I did manage to get the last three boxes in town for $22 a box, which wasn't too awful. But nobody knows when to expect more. Oddly enough, I really wasn't a gun nut until this latest round of nonsense. Now I'm in it for life, getting full into reloading, stocking up on weapons and ammo. They done pissed me off...

The place I used to work did guns shows for a couple of large distributors. We thought the numbers (sales) went way up when Obama got elected. This year they have went into the billions, which is just unheard of. A few million was high.
This year people want to stock up for some reason.

What I've heard from a few sources is that Homeland Security has preordered enough ammo to keep all the factories busy for 5 years, and manufacturers are scrambling for capacity to serve their regular customers. I can't blame them for grabbing the business, but it seems a bit shortsighted...

Roger Wright wrote: This is smelling like a conspiracy
Of course the real reason is capitalism and fear mongering at its best.
One might suppose however that there could be some conspirators working at the fear mongering to make more money.
Although realistically I doubt that they are that smart. Which isn't to say some might be going at it on their own but that isn't a conspiracy.
