I live in the southern U.S. (TN), close to Nashville. And they're calling for an ice storm from about now until 8am tomorrow. Wonderful. Haha. Anyone else in the general region and planning to be affected by the ice storm? Depending on the conditions in the morning, I may or may not be able to come to work. At least not until midway through the day. Either way, it's the beginning of a new year. So I have paid time I can take. A small break would be kind of nice. Not too much going on here at work at the moment to stress a large workload.

I'm a few hours north of you in Cincinnati. We're supposed to get some snow from 9PM to 5AM, but nothing too drastic. Maybe an inch of accumulation.

I live just a couple miles south of Memphis. Been going steady here for a few hours, but roads are just wet atm. Icicles hanging from mirrors on truck and whatnot. It could get ugly by morning. I only live 2 miles from the office though, I'll be here tomorrow regardless

Oh, I see. Living so close does come with some disadvantages, huh? I live about 15 minutes away. But I also have three small children, 2 in daycare and one in school. And my wife is out of town for a family emergency right now. So if they don't have school and/or daycare I would have to find a babysitter before I can come in. Haha.

I'm not so lucky, wife doesn't work atm, kids are all teenagers anyway.. And the boss knows I have a 4x4.. lol Despite teh fact that I could do 99% of my work from home, I will be here anyway. Besides, stay at home with the crew cooped up in the house... nah I'd rather sit in my office

I'm in Minnesota where we should be getting that kind of weather, but it is 28 and sunny here (practically t-shirt and shorts weather) and tomorrow is above freezing.

south + ice + roads == work at home.
Not negotiable. People always think, oh it's just a little ice. Years back in Atlanta, "most" of the ice had cleared. Going to youth ice hockey games, I saw dozens of cars in various states of disassembly....
Just say no...

From what I've seen south + snow + roads == work at home. I was visiting Florida once and they got a half inch of snow and starting freaking out.

south + THREAT of snow/ice = schools closed two kids home today even though it was doing absolutely nothing this morning and in fact the roads are still not bad ..yet.

Jeez...I used to walk to school and get an inch of snow on me by the time I'd get there. And not even a delay for that...

I vaguely remember way back when I was in high school, a snow day was an excuse to do donuts all the way to school(yes, had my own car from age 15). No thoughts of school out and I grew up just a couple of hours from where I am now.

Ice and snow are very normal here and since about two years adequate winter tires are made mandatory by law. Without good tires it would really be no good idea to drive anywhere, but refusing to come to work would appear a little hysterical.
And ever since I had my first car, I dive to an empty parking lot full of fresh snow every winter and look what the tires and the car have to say to that. Simulating an obstacle with a cardboard box and then trying to stop before it or evade it is good training and after that you can do some laps around the lot, see when the tires lose their grip, drift through the curves and try to control the drifting. All without anybody getting hurt.

Living next to a parking lot, I can attest that this is incredibly fun and very good training indeed.

Indiana just had that storm. 1/4 inch of ice on my car. And it was the first day of school as well. No delays. Just a lot of crashes.
I hate ice storms.

Haha. Well, in my area we ended up not getting anything. Nothing more than rain (some of it a mix with freezing rain). No ice this morning. Temperature was 33°F, one degree above freezing. No ice on my car, on the road, or elsewhere. That's usually how it goes. It's when they don't expect it to hit us that we get it the worst, it seems.
