Recently was reported an air miss at Reagan Airport and one of the factors is Intersecting Runways at that airport. A number of airports across the world have intersecting runways, while a number of them have parallel runways.
As a passenger I am blissfully unaware, or not bothered about my flights taking off or landing on such an intersecting runway, and whether my flight would experience such an near miss.
Any thoughts on the alertness of air traffic controllers in airports having intersecting runways against those with parallel runways? Any other important aspects?

Runways are designed taking into account prevailing wind directions.
Wind doesnβt always blow in the same direction, so the two most common directions are chosen for alignment of the runways.
Hence you get intersecting runways.
It is the job of the air traffic and ground traffic controllers at the airport to ensure that planes donβt come close to each other on the taxiways and runways.
They do an excellent job and that is why you rarely hear of planes running into each other.
The possibility exists that communication between the controller and the pilots in planes are distorted by static or external factors such as pilots being too busy and not paying sufficient attention to the radio. This is why both pilots and controllers are required to repeat what they hear and not just reply βokβ or βRogerβ or βunderstoodβ. Pilots also need to identify their aircraft by the airline and flight number each time they have a conversation with the controller so that the controller can be sure that his instructions have been heard by the pilot to whom they are addressed.
But in case the pilots are battling a sudden unforeseen emergency, such as a bird strike or loss of engine power or unexpected wind shear, it is entirely possible their attention to radio communication is reduced and then incidents/accidents happen.

To add to Vivi's detailed answer, when there are parallel runways, one is usually being used for take-offs and the other for landings. Intersecting runways usually mean a lack of space. When there are two (or even three) runways serving different directions, they usually meet close to their apexes, forming either a V or a triangle.

That's what we call it, but I'm pretty sure I didn't know the term until about 20 years ago.
And I'd been a licensed driver for 40 odd years by then.

In my state its generally considered a no-passing line. Snow line would not make sense in many US states.

I was referring to the line along the EDGE of the road, not a centre line.

I meant white line on side of road. If the side of the road is paved shoulder, you can use it stop temporarily (car breaks down, etc). The white separates the main lane from the shoulder (if any). This means one cannot use that part of the road for passing unless exiting the road or the road is temporarily block. States may vary on these rules. Sorry I mixed up fog and snow. Doh.

That's probably what I would have called it in the distant past.
And yes, I've met the yellow and red flavours in the UK and Singapore.
Here, we don't have those lines, but they do paint the kerb red for "no stopping".
