Political commentary is supposedly an off topic here. However, one can be forgiven for getting the impression that certain members here support and encourage US propaganda.

"...that affected more than 230,000 computers in more than 150 countries earlier this year."
I was surprised by how low that number was.

According to Kaspersky, 98% of the infected systems were running Windows 7.

The point is that Windows 10 is immune against the WannaCry thing, whereas earlier operating systems are not.

So a young friend of mine, currently out of work with rent and car finance to pay is currently in the process of applying for Flu Camp [^] (he's registered his interest and is currently awaiting medical results to see if he is suitable).
If his application is successful, he will be placed in a house in London for two weeks, injected with the flu virus, subjected to experimental drugs and monitored. For his troubles he will be given just short of £4K + free board.
So my question is, would you consider doing this? For the purpose of this theoretical question imagine you are still getting paid from your regular job - like paid holiday without losing any holiday allocation - so in affect you're getting 4K on top of your regular salary. I got to admit I would consider it.

£4k - indisputably nice!
'Flu - bearable at a push - it's horrible but you tend to be unconscious for most of it.
Two weeks in London? Leave it aht! You're 'avin' a bleedin' girarffe, incha??

It's a toss-up as to which would be worse: two weeks of flu or two weeks in London....
|
|

London. Flu you know you will get over fairly quickly, but London leaves deep scars...
(Plus, it takes weeks to get the black crud out of your nose after a single day visit ...)

If it is experimental, than not all effects will be mapped, and long-term effects might be even more unclear. I would not consider that gamble for a lousy 4000 pounds.
Then again, I need not even apply; I'm already taking a lot of medication and that might interact with other stuff in an unpredictable way.

Found this: [^]
If the numbers are correct, then dying from catching the flu is a lot more likely than winning the lottery. I guess chances of dying are even worse when dealing with experimental crap.
I'd tell them to f#!k off and try it on themselves, not matter what sum they pay.
