Values of 1-5k were reasonable but this is currently absolute *********************.

I'm considering investing in it, but just to make a few extra dollars. It looks like it's down 12% overnight. I figure you should only invest an amount which you're willing to lose.

err, pedantic time,
people should consider how much can afford to lose (or risk) for the chance of a gain.
I have $110, I owe $100 rent, I might be very willing to throw $110 in the pot but I can only afford to loose $10. That's often the difference between people that still have a place to sleep, and those roughing it in the park.

I'd only consider investing a maximum of my portfolio 5% in it for short-term investments. It is the unknown, but it's picking up steam and has a good chance to survive.

One of my hobbies is YouTube; yes I know it's a waste of time. Some of the people I talk with on there make videos, online gambling, affliate marketing, and bit coin. They'll do anything not to work, but start begging when finances go awry.

Is that before or after it is lost?

I think it has great potential but it has a lot of growing an maturing to do first.
The market for it is very volatile, and thieves have stolen millions of dollars of it at a time, so security is an issue I think that they are working on (ongoing process for sure).
As others have said, only invest what you are willing to lose at time of investment.

I just love fireworks!
They go whoosh - higher and higher into the sky; brilliantly painting the heavens.
When suddenly - their light goes out.
Soon after which they plunge headlong into hell.

It is going to crash and burn.
Insecure, an overinflated bubble, demanding huge amounts of server storage and energy to maintain transactions, which are thew only proof anyone owns anything. Imagine it getting hacked. People wealth wiped out.
It is an interesting toy that has become silly.

There's more debt in the world than money, so some "wealth" will evaporate anyway.

Bit bloody Wild West out there at the moment. SEC already pinged one scam CC IPO.
wasn't that long ago every man and his dog was out to setup an online bookstore, - that battle even took out a well established brick and mortar shop. There's still a few out there, but the one that had the biggest success had to become way more than bookstore to be #1. So will the eventual winner of the CC need to be something else as well? How many will get burned by this.
History always repeats and it sure looks like a "crypto-currency bubble" is forming - getting in is easy, it's avoiding greed and figuring out when to bail that matters.

true, true, but you know if it's not you that jumps first there will be somebody else, not maybe, but definitely. (And if you jump early: take some profit and/or perhaps your initial investment and go back in again with the balance.)
