The lure of filthy lucre, I'm afraid.
It's another excuse to unload a pile of unsold tat on unsuspecting customers by offering loss leaders that run out quickly and hoping you pick up a pile of junk at the same time, I think. Certainly the Amazon ads I've been getting emailed to me for a week or so would bear that out.
[edit]
Just had another one: "Dash buttons". You stick them on the wall, or washing machine and when you run out of something you press the button, it connects to your WiFi and emails you to remind you to buy it.
Or, if you have kids, it gets pressed a million times a day just to annoy you.

Well, pre-Amazon I remember pre-Christmas sales, just not being called Black Friday...
Also thos dash buttons I didn't really pay much attention to but presumed it added the item to your Amazon order, always seemed a bad idea with Kids (or my Friends)...

I'm sure Amazon would love it if they did - but how quickly would they get hacked?

Sounds like the dumbest idea ever. Who comes up with this kind of tat?

I don't think they would survive with my kids.. I wouldn't even give the "dash button" a week before its broken.
hmm maybe I should offer my kids to amazon as durability testers

I'd never heard of it until recent times but there was obviously a yawning chasm for an extra commercialised day between the increasingly commercialised Halloween and the perennially commercialised Christmas.

And why haven't Hallmark caught on to this? Where are the "Happy Black Friday!" cards?

Well, they try and cover every other possible event. Some idiot even sent us a "Happy Easter" card last year ...

And next year you'll feel you have to send one back, and then the market has doubled, and soon enough we'll all be sending them out of guilt because we've received one!

A good question that I can't answer.
But it is not only UK related. Germany has been infected too.

They certainly had a big influence on his look but it's an urban legend that they were the first to dress him in red.
That said, it can't be long until Christmas gets renamed to "Christmas Sponsored by Coca Cola."

Not really. They just took the character and dressed it up in company colors for advertising.

Black Friday is well over a century old, too.

The protestants of course had a problem with him being a saint, so they reinvented him in a less catholic way. The communists could not completely get rid of him, so they reinvented him in a less religious way. The list is long.
