School photos have arrived, the choice was +£20 for each single picture [with a tastelessful cardboard frame] or download the images [5 of them] for £45.
Yup, £45 for five bloody images. Now for the best part. No, not paying £9 per picture but for this bit - allow five days for delivery. So, I have to wait UP TO FIVE DAYS so they can send me a secure link so that I can download the pictures. If they're not RAW, then the photographer will be!
Five frogging days to prepare a link! Unbelphantlivable! I guess they don't need studio spots as they're such sunshines.

Went round my brother's house a few months ago, there was a new display of 5 photos of his family on the wall, professionally taken, and they did look good, which was what my missus remarked to them.
"How much" she asked?
"Erm, quite a lot" my brother's wife replied.
"Go on..." I encouraged.
"Just over a thousand" she admitted.
A grand! A $%£^ing grand! For five photos of people you see every bloody day anyway!

That's the whole point: you replace the pictures with the kids.
And Social Services get very narky when you try to post kids on websites, apparently...

Agreed. We went to a photographer to get some professional pictures taken of our little one.
At first we were thinking to get a photo on a box type thing - I changed my mind when he said it would be £500.
The Mrs wanted to get one, I spat my dummy out a bit and said no bloody way am I paying that amount of money - we ordered some prints which we were not even allowed the digital versions of and I will not be going back.
Since then I've managed to take some nice photos of the boy without needing a professional to do it.

It'd not like they need special rooms and equipment to develop the negatives and then create a finished product from them taking time and care anymore.
Any idiot with a printer can create the finished product once the actual photo has been taken.

What the elephant. You can buy a decent SLR and a tripod and take it yourself for that money ... a printer's might charge you £30 to print it on nice material, but four figures is just ridiculous.

Order 1 reasonable sized photo. Scan at high resolution, print on photopaper, or email to other family members. simples.

We [Yes, that's Mrs Wife] wanted two of the pictures which came out at around 40 notes, so a lady for the others is 'a bargain' :chortle:

It's a bit more than that, I need to get ink for the printer but I don't know where to go.

I am deeply suspicious of these professional photographers.
Prices are astronomical now, and I think it is because decent cameras and getting decent quality prints on any surface of any size is within everyone's reach.
To make it clear that they do something that you cannot do at home, or even that is far better than you can do at home, they put the prices up so, so much.

I had fun watching a professional photographer a couple of years ago with the eldest 3 of my boys.
The younger of the 3 is hyperactive so it was well worth the stupid price the other half paid for it purely for watching the photographer begin to lose his patience trying to keep him still long enough to take a single picture.

It is a lot more difficult than we can imagine.
Doing portrait is one thing that it is the harder; it is the classical thing to do with less artistic value to it than any other type of photography and more technical; you have to "make the shot". (have a look at the work of Yousuf Karsh[^] ); even when doing shoots at school.
Other types of professional photography are a difficult; wedding photography is hell (I've tried doing one a couple of weeks ago, and it will be the last one); event photography is hard; sport photographers are in a class by themselves.
The democratization of photography does not mean everyone is a good/great photographer and that they are prepared to spend a whole day shooting and a couple of more days picking and cleaning up photographs and lamenting on how many shot they missed; and having to deal with customers that are never happy with what you did wrong and right.
I'd rather be phishing!

I don't doubt for one second that a photograph from a professional will be better than I could take.
I don't doubt for one second that the increase in quality is not worth £500.

Fixed that
For personal use I suppose the prices of professional photographs are way too expensive. However for businesses having professional shots on the website etc. may well be worth the extra money.
Additionally, if your company does some project work for others the price per hour is also calculated quite high usually. So if you hire are photographer for a day to get some good photos should be probably of more or less on the same level of payment.

Last company I worked for whored me out for £750 a day (not that I saw any of it of course) for general computer related stuff not covered by their contracts with us.

In the US unless you explicitly contract otherwise the pictures still belong to the photographer.
