This is why I consequently don't use Visual Studio anymore. VS 2010 was the last one that was not totally souped up.

Sure. How about SharpDevelop? That's what I have been using and with it I can use any framework that is installed. Everything is a little more spartan, but that's not a bad thing. I only miss the feature to debug directly into webservices.

Using the latest software of Microsoft is akin to being blown to bits?!   And Microsoft makes the best software in the world so I'd hate to be using the other guys minefields.

Patches Tuesdays in the Windows 10 world mean there's a single, large, all-inclusive update to download and install. Previous versions are still splitting updates into Windows, .NET, IE, Security vs "Quality" (HA!) updates, etc.
In theory it's more manageable...but that doesn't necessarily translate into reality. I'm currently looking at a machine of mine that fails to install this last Tuesday's update and insists on running some recovery thing which can't do jack-sh*t, and gets stuck in a loop. I clean installed Win10 1709 on that machine when it came out, because the updates for the previous version were broken and it had never managed to upgrade itself to 1703, which I had to skip. I haven't installed anything other than the OS on this box, so it's in a very clean state, less than 2 months old, and yet it manages to face-plant badly. To be fair though, I can't complain about the 5-6 other machines--physical and virtual--I also have running Win10.
This is just a media playback machine, hooked up to my projector, so I'm thinking this will be moved over to Linux soon. My current plan to sit back and watch some movie tonight has already been blown to sh*t, and I'm not going to put up with that any longer.

Working as a programmer for the DoD is a pain in the ass. There is pretty much no standard software (I've see PostGRE, Sql Server, and Oracle, all at the same command, and in EVERY instance, they are several versions behind the latest available).
Wanting "the latest version of everything" depends entirely on the contract, and the contracts are generally so poorly written that I'm surprised that anything gets done - at all. The contract I'm on had to be amended because it specifically called out MCSA for SQL Server 2008 R2, and when I came onboard, those cert tests weren't even available. And before I could take the first cert test for 2012, the contract had to be amended to "any currently available certification". Otherwise, I wouldn't be reimbursed by my employer.
I'm currently looking for other work - mostly because of Qlikview, but also because of the onerous requirements and almost total inability to get anything done in a timely fashion due to permission restrictions. It's a f*ckin circus.
And when they migrate to sql server 2012, there is exactly ONE developer that's a certified MCSA (me) to migrate over 500 mission critical jobs to the new server.
I plan on having a new job before that task is assigned to me.

I started to see freezes after a little while using FF and when I looked at my memory meter, it's maxed out by FF. WTF?

It even looks like it now also has separate processes for opened tabs. Freezing up and crashing all tabs was what made me switch to Chrome. Does freezing up now only affect one tab?

Of the three add-ons, the one I'd miss most is FireFTP. Sure - I can install FileZilla - but it's not as convenient. Unfortunately, I know I'll have to bite the bullet before long. The others, Better Privacy (SOL Cookies) and FireBug - they're sort of built in on the new version. A couple of others do have the 57 capability. There's also IceWeasel and other forks . . .
