Reminds me of that Tom Robbins novel "Even cowgirls get the blues", this head shrink that one morning calls in well - he has realized that he has been sick all the time until now, so now that he is well he will not come to work.
(It must be thirty years since I read that novel! I should dig it up and re-read it, I remember it as funny as hell. Like all Tom Robbins books - as long as you hit the right Tom Robbins. There are, at least, two authors of that name.)

It's old-school time - I'm gonna try installing them on my Linux box. 
First, I have to buy the games, though (I think). I looked on Amazon, and they're surprisingly expensive for being over 20 years old.

They are about £8 on GoG as well.
Steam has 'em for around £4 each - not sure if they'll work on Linux though.

GoG version can be played on Linux with some preparation...

IIRC, Quake 1 has been released to the market, so there is a package (quakespasm) for the engine and files... There are even open source engine ports up to Quake 3...
Do some search and you may find something for free too (at least to see if it worth the money)...

Doom, Hexen and Quake.
We used to have multiplayer gaming sessions where everyone came around to my house lugging big desktop boxes and huge 21" CRT monitors plus keyboard, mouse and speakers (one guy drilled the top of his case and installed a suitcase type handle to make it easier). We had a COAX ethernet network for up to eight machines - if anyone physically disconnected or reconnected we had to restart all the machines.
We use two rooms in the house, four people on tables in each room (good for team games).
Popcorn, crisps, nuts, soda/coffee, etc. My wife would sometimes bake a cake or cookies or even sausage rolls on occasion and then retire to watch TV in the bedroom.
These sessions often started on a Friday evening and went on to the early hours on Saturday morning when we would have a break for the day until resuming Saturday evening until lunchtime on Sunday. Wives and girlfriends would meet up and go out shopping or to the movies or something safe in the knowledge that we weren't going anywhere!
I miss those days. Playing against unknown people on the internet just doesn't cut it the same way.

Nowadays, it would be a lower physical footprint. From what I read, you can play quake on a raspberry pi/HDMI LCD monitor (I have a spare Pi3+, so I'm gonna give it a go, more for curiosity than anything else). A single 8-foot folding table could support up to 8 people. Most modern laptops also have the chops to run Quake 1/2 quite well.
24 and 32-port switches are cheap (Quake 1 is limited to a max of 16 players, and I think QuakeWorld was 32), everyone brings their own 20-foot ethernet cable/keyboard/mouse, and you have a freakin Quake party.

Well, my intent is to host a quakeworld server, but your level of success will be completely dependent on the latency you experience.
When I'm ready, I'll announce. I'm not sure how it's gonna work because I don't have a static IP, but hey, that's part of the adventure of discovery.

Here[^] you go. Quake for the unbeatable price of 0 chickens. They have lots of more stuff at the same price and always bundled with the emulator if needed.

Dosbox works on Linux. Quake 1 was dos, not sure about the other two.
Jack of all trades, master of none, though often times better than master of one.

They say: if the machine is otherwise OK (including the fuse) some crap may get into the slide switch to stop it sliding to / staying in the on position, in which case clean it out.
(Singapore is not quite that bad, but being here I've become more adept interpreting Chinglish.)
