Knowing if your colleagues have a sense of humor is important. It might not be the best approach to take with younger interviewers though. Until a year or two ago I'd have no idea where the reference was from. If I saw it growing up I'd forgotten about it since then. 
OTOH my current consumption of TV probably averages under 2 hrs/week averaged over the whole year (hasn't been more than 3 or 4 shows at any point in the last 4 years, and generally not at all during summer repeats) mean a current TV reference isn't likely to work much better either.
