Or Liar sues Liar?

California lawyer sues Microsoft claiming storage space on Surface tablet less than advertised[^].

Does he have a point? Not really, I'm thinking. Because the ASUS Android 32GB tablet had stuff (preinstalled Apps) on the 32GB card when I bought it. And I think that's where the Android OS is installed (or is it installed in ROM?).

Sounds like he has buyer's remorse.

If it's a successful lawsuit it sets a precedent for every single hard drive ever bought.

Yeah, that's true. No more selling a 956 GB drive as a 1TB drive just because 956 * 1024 * 1024 = 1,002,438,656 bytes.

Hard drives are measured in decimal megabytes so it would be 956 * 1,000,000

OH really? I guess it depends on the manufacturer then. Because the Seagate 1TB drive I have only has 956MB. But it's called a 1TB drive.

Seagate explicitly explains that for them "1 TB" is "953,674 MB" and I am still am unclear both what you are measuring and how you are measuring it.

GeneralRe: Liar sues Microsoftmemberahmed zahmed17 Nov '12 - 8:25
That may be, but that's not how it's advertised. In any case, I'm not complaining, you misunderstand. I was merely pointing out that almost everything we buy is "rounded up" in some way. It's almost a lie, but not quite, since most of us see through it and understand. It does bother me though. Just a little. Because the naive initiate (n00b) will assume that 1MB = 1024*1024 Bytes, not 1000*1000 bytes since that's what's taught in school.

I've never seen a PC advertised for sale anywhere that has the amount of free space on the hard drive advertised rather than the total size.

GeneralRe: Liar sues Microsoftmemberlewax0015 Nov '12 - 5:32
And I'm pretty sure most ads have fine print that specifically say useable space is less than the total advertised space.
GeneralRe: Liar sues MicrosoftmemberPaul Conrad15 Nov '12 - 6:21
Yes, there is fine print. I remember back when I bought a "200 gb" hard drive when they were top of the line, and it clearly said in the fine print that the actual capacity would be less, so I wasn't put off when I saw it was 186 gb after formatting it.

GeneralRe: Liar sues Microsoftmembermark merrens15 Nov '12 - 6:10
I think he has a point: it's not like you could remove all of the pre-installed files and make use of the space. They should be made to advertise usable space like:

32GB total/16GB usable.

It's like buying a car advertised with a 10 gallon tank: you would be mighty pissed to find it only has space for 9 gallons because the rest of the space is reserved for the gas pump or other equipment.

The issue is that people buying these things are less tech savvy than we are. We take these things for granted and MS probably is accustomed to a world where these things are known.

I will say, I bet W8 takes up more space than Jelly Bean, making the issue worse on a Windows tablet.

Absolutely which is why they should be made to be honest about what they are selling. You and I take it for granted that we don't actually get the advertised space but maybe we are also wrong for accepting that.

Well, the size of hard drives is a flat out lie. The size of the memory on the tablet, is true, it's just that some of it is in use.
