If you're using Sql Server 2005 Express, and decide you want to "upgrade" to Sql Server 2008 Express, don't bother using the upgrade option in the installer. did, and it didn't seem to do anything useful. My SSME app wasn't upgraded, and as near as I could tell, nothing else was either. Take the shortcut of backying up your database(s) and uninstalling 2005 first. In fact, uninstall anything even remotely associated with SQL Server. I had 2005 parts, 2008 parts, and even 2012 parts (probably from installing VS2012). I uninstalled ALL of it, and reinstalled 2008 from scratch again. Of course, I was then confronted with almost 500mb of Windows updates, but that's okay (I guess).
Also, you can't use SSME from 2005 to manage a 2008 database.

I suggest never upgrading anything; always wipe and reinstall. I also don't trust any "uninstall".
On the other hand... the other day I upgraded SQL Server 2008 Express to 2012 Express -- I haven't had any trouble with it yet. But this sort of thing is why I'd prefer to have separate systems for database and development.

My upgrade from VS11 Beta to VS2012 Pro was unnoticed and perfect.

I tried it years ago, and even posted here about it. It can't be done. Worse, uninstalling SS2005 doesn't remove it, but leaves the system cluttered with just enough crap to ensure that SS2008 will never work properly. Don't even think about ever successfully accessing the local help files. The only success I had was installing 2008 on a different machine which had never been touched by a previous version.

This is weird - the first time I started up MSSE2008, it claimed there were instances of 2005 on my machine. This was after I'd removed everything and installed just 2008R2.
