So, last weekend I checked the rainwater tank (we're not on mains water) and we were down to a couple of days supply. Gambled on the forecast of 'possible showers'
Today our 40 000 litre tank has been overflowing. The pool (12m x 6m - you do the maths) has gone from skimmer box level to overflowing.
Both dams are at capacity (last week I had to stop using it as the level was too low to pump without dredging)
And it is peeing down, with a forecast of heavier rain and tornados.
Now the flaming power is out so I have to go out and get soaking opening the garage doors and front gate - both of whih are electric.
Think ill just to back to bed

It's finally raining here, but it's been a dreadfully slow drizzle and probably dropped all of 0.01" of water all day. The news hyped it up to be a four day storm, but it's already clearing...

Are you up in QLD somewhere ?? - we (Sydney) just started getting rain early this morning - hasnt stopped yet  (although it did ruin the chance of a 40km ride I'd planned)

For ever - or slightly less on average we probably buy water twice a year - mainly the day before torrential rain

Haha. Without any rain, how long does that last? It's something I'm considering building out when I buy a place. I'm just trying to figure out how big of a reserve I feel good with.

It's hard to say - maybe a month if two - depends on no of baths etc. a d it's never happened - we live in qld so always have rain!

I'm on rainwater too, although in NZ so a bit more of a temparate climate.
We have @ 38,000l storage and we once made three months on that (family of four), was about to ring for the tanker and it pi**ed down for a day which filled them up and lasted another 10 weeks. Mind you that's being careful/paranoid about water use...like "if its yellow let it mellow, if its brown flush it down", no baths, short showers, minimal use of washing machine bla bla.
My recent Plan B is a small swimming pool which has a capacity of about 12,000 litres. Last summer I pumped that back into the tanks when we ran low.
Its amazing how you watch how much water you use when supply isn't a guaranteed thing.
Around where I live most places have 2 x 25,000 litre tanks, a couple have 3.

It all depends much more on the size of roof and amount of rainfall than it does on tank size. After all it doesn't matter how big the tank is if it is empty!
Best advice is get two or more tanks not just one, and go for as much capacity as you can afford.
