I vaguely recall, when I was a nipper, Radio 1 used to mostly play records and the DJs were a sort of inter-record cement. Now it seems to be the other way on and it is hard to tell whether swapping the situation back would improve things.
Option a) Mostly Fatuous idiots trying too hard to be "funny" and "outrageous" by playing tunes on a swanee whistle
Option b) Mostly Wand Erection, featuring Nobby Styles or whatever slaughtering some song by a better band and their ilk
I had a case of dysentery in Egypt that caused me less problems than this.
Yours faithfully,
Sir Hubert Gusset

You know you're getting old when modern music sounds like rubbish.
Mind you, a lot of the stuff when I was young was rubbish too. And there is good music out there still if you listen for it. You just won't hear it on Wunnerfull Wadio Wun, because seems to have signed a pact with Satan and his Muzac Agent Simon Cowell to only play total and utter drivel.

Thought Satan and Simon were the same person.

I can't speak to that since I have no idea what his bank account is like but he sure is more annoying than Lucy Furr, IMHO.

Maybe as you get older you realize songs written by vacuous and hedonistic teenagers, and the fat balding producers that sleep with them, really aren't 'deep' after all?

It is not the music that is the issue, it is the hosts of Radio 1, it has all gone to pot lately. Nick I'm a twat Grimshaw, Sarah is a Cox. At least there is a bit of funny humour with Scott Mills. Hope Baby maker Cotton is back soon.

Magic and/or Radio 6 is the way to go.

Radio 6 FTW![^]
Seriously, great music, stuff you've never heard, in effect it is actually a music channel rather than an entertainment channel which is what R1 and R2 are, we just didn't notice the change.
And, if my understanding of the music business is correct then they play the nonsense from what is produced today is because the record companies make it cheap to do so since it increases sales, whereas the less popular current stuff (but at least the same quality and possibly better) and the older stuff is more expensive; same as the cost of new CD's from mega artists vs. the back catalogue of good artists which are expensive: low prices to cause impulse buys and high prices for the things people are buying because they have deliberately gone looking for them, it's just a business model.
So anyway, Radio 6, give it a whirl, especially Sunday morning with Cerys, each weekday with Lauren Laverne, then Edith Bowman and Liz Kershaw on Saturday - proper music nerds playing great music, much of which you will never have heard of (which is a big part of its attraction for me), plenty of people in the business because they love music not because they are entertainers who happen to have radio as their medium rather than TV.

In the States we have MTV. Started as all music videos. Then it got to a point where there is little music so they started VH1 (video hits 1). Again started as all music videos. Now both have more talk than music.
