I inherited a few guns this weekend from my dad (passed away last year), One was an old Stevens double-barel break-action shotgun (circa 1960's) that he inherited from his brother, another was a 7-shot .22 revolver circa 1965, but the gem (probably of interest to the brits on here) was a Webley Mk "V" revolver with a 6-inch barrel, also inherited from his brother).
This is the rarest of all the Webley revolvers in terms of production numbers (3700-4000 produced), which makes the following fairly disheartening.
The rifling has been removed, and the barrel threaded for a choke, so it could shoot 45 shot ammo with moon clips. The gun was used as a varmint pistol. As a collector's item, it's worth nothing more than to serve as a curiosity, and it would probably bring more money as scrap metal. As a self-defense pistol, there are far better .410 pistols available that would make bigger holes in bad guys. Since the rifling was removed from the barrel, I can't even return it to original condition (even if the parts were readily available). What a crying shame...

There ought to be a law against mistreatment of such collector's items. (OTOH, who would they sue?  )

While I can agree that when something becomes vintage or antique, it's sad to find that it has been altered.
Yet, one must also recognize that it was once new, and at that point it was just a tool for doing a job.
I can imagine a future when someone finds an old Mustang in a garage in Texas and is shocked to discover that the original engine was replaced and the hood has a huge hole in it with a freakin' blower sticking through it.

... I can't get used to the random layout feature. Who knows how often I have set back the layout option from fixed to fluid just today. What will I get when I post this message?
Relaxed or tight spacing? Will it suddently open all threads or only show the captions? 50 posts per page or maybe less? Who knows. Years ago I reported getting seemingly random settings at about every second click, but that was when not logged in. Now I have this even when I'm logged in.
I can assure you, this is not a joke. That's a very real bug which occurs on different computers (at work and at home) and logging out or clearing the cookies (and everything else that you can clear in a browser) has not helped.
Ok, I'm going to post it now. let's see what settings I get ...
Edit: It went well! All settings as I want them! Or I just won the CP settings lottery.
Edit^2: Did not last long. After editing I got only 10 posts per page. let's spin the wheel again...

I have never had any problems with layout. All the options I set stay set and work as I expected them to.
What are you doing to your browser?

Absolutely nothing. Just looking at your response changed my settings to thread view and tight spacing. Sometimes the settings stay for hours and then they change with every click. I have found no pattern yet.
Edit: Posting this changed my spacing to compact.

I can confirm your observations. No doubt that it happens, although I suspect you may exaggerate the frequency with which it happen.... Irritating, but as a programmer, I'm sure it's a feature, not a bug...

I already had that problem years ago when it was better not to log in while at work. Now it also happens when I'm logged in.
Now I have three computers where this happens: My old desktop here (Win7 / Firefox), my notebook (mobile connection / Win 7 / Firefox) and my computer at work (Win 10 / Firefox)
Somehow Firefox looks like a common denominator here. Could it be that it's the problem?

Unlikely.
Your preferences are stored on the server. Each time you log in those preferences are loaded and used. If you log in with different accounts, or don't log in, then your preferences may be different.
A month or so ago we dropped support for saving preferences for non-logged in users. It was a clever setup that would allow you to use and update preferences when logged in and not logged in by using cookies and attempting to consolidate them all when you did happen to log in, but it turned out to cause more confusion than it warranted so we dropped that. So: if you see different settings while logged in and not logged in then that makes sense. But different settings while logged in? That's very strange.
I'll continue digging.

Thanks. Perhaps my new observations will lead us to the problem:
1) In the last days I never got the reputation point for posting something. Since this morning I do, with no apparent reason why this has changed.
2) The signature I entered in my settings does not appear in my posts. The textbox for the signature was empty when I tried to edit it while writing a reply.
3) Sometimes I don't get any notifications that a reply has been posted to something I wrote. There is no red number at the top of the page and nothing in the notification list.
All this, of course, when logged in with any one of my three typical computers.
I need a perfect, to the point answer as I am not aware of this.
Please don't reply explaining what method overloading is

Problem is probably that you're using a Euro-version of Windows.
I discovered these existed when browsing MSDN.
I'm sure that's the root all of your problems, both PC and probably even digestive.
