I ordered a book yesterday from a supplier in the US. Later that afternoon, she sent me the tracking number given to her by FedEx and with it, the link so I could see where the package is. FedEx itemise everything I need to know. The only thing missing was an update telling me the pilot went for a sh*t.
If only job agencies could be as professional as delivery firms are with their tracking. Then again, recruitment consultants are on a par with lawyers, estate agents and dog owners who let their pets dump on the pavement.

Even better, I find that, quite often, Fedex beats their expected delivery date by a day or two.

In other words, FedEx pads their estimates and people are happy when they beat them.
I used to pad the times I was getting home when my parents asked and they were always happy when I came home "early".

Under promise, over deliver. Customers actually appreciate you lying to them. Brilliant.

How come that doesn't work with project managers?

Because PM's over promise and over deliver. Just a small difference.

There exists a need to deliver packages in the world. Fedex owns a significant amount of that.
If there was an employment agency that owned all jobs (not just referrals) in a similar way then one can suppose that they too would have a significantly enhanced experience for the worker.

You're comparing skilled people, who know their jobs and how to perform them, with uneducated, untrained idiots, who couldn't do a real job if you paid them a million a week.

Funny thing is, it was one of two books I ordered. One came from Amazon in the UK and the FedEx one shipped from the US. It took about 36 hours for FedEx to collect it from the seller and get it to my front door. Amazon (using Royal Mail) took nearly four days so-called expedited postage to get it how far? 100 miles? Go figure.
To be honest, Royal Mail at least made an effort. If you look at some DHL vans they have a Royal Warrant on them. RWs are only issued by members of the royal family if you've provided an exemplary service to them over a minimum period which is something like five years. There's a bloke who advertises in Country Life magazine who sells bissom brooms and he too has a Royal Warrant. I mention that if only to show that it's not just big corporates who get them. Now, the queen, in all her majesty (bless her little cotton socks), bestowed an RW on DHL which means she no longer trusts the mail company bearing her name, Royal Mail.
If Royal Mail are better than that festering slime pond populated by recruitment consultants, then the latter are indeed the lowest form of life and populated, like you say, by untrained idiots...
