I know the crime is abhorrent and, if guilty, this man[^] deserves everything they throw at him. But along with murder & kidnapp they are charging him with perverting the course of justice for getting rid of the body! I know this charge will probably get dropped in favour of the more serious ones but I just find it incredible that they charge him for that, as part of the crime is trying to get away with it.
Using this logic you could charge a bank robber for wearing a mask or a shop-lifter for concealing something up their jumper for perverting the course of Justice. Unless I'm missing something??

You're missing that logic is not welcome in "justice".

I don't know the particulars, but sometimes they lay a 'safety' charge - so even if the prosecution for more serious offences don't happen (say lack of evidence) they already have a charge which may be able to be used to keep him off the streets

This. Often, the police and prosecutors charge the alleged offender with anything and everything for which there is the slightest scrap of evidence. This is much more common in the case of crimes like murder. That way, they can at least get the person on something , even if the main charge is dismissed or pled down.

Remember this is legalise we're dealing with where a good lawyer knows the legislation and case law inside and out.
And a great lawyer takes the judge to lunch.

His lawyer has said he is "Probably responsible for her death" but denies murder and all the other charges.
Be very interesting to find out what he says happened, cos he has behaved very oddly since they first picked him up.

Yeah I'm 'looking forward'(for want of a better phrase) to following this one. It appears that they aren't greatly confident of securing a conviction without the body and I'm expecting his excuse to be on a par with Ian Huntley's 'Gave one a bath, she hit her head and the other one screamed so I put my hand over her mouth' for an incredulous excuse.
Also not heard anything about that fire in Derby lately? Have they still got the parents? What's going round the rumour mill up there?

Arrested another bloke late last year, charges changed from murder to manslaughter.
The parents and this other bloke still in custody and all plead not guilty last month.
Trial set for February.
The day it happened he was due in court to gain access to his other kids with another woman. They all previously lived together. Thoughts at the time were he got someone to light the fire with the intention of pinning it on this other woman, he could then get those kids too and get a bigger house. The kids in the house were, of course, not supposed to die.
Seems he is going to be living in the biggest house of all for quite some time.

The U.S. doesn't have a justice system, we have a penal system.
Wearing a mask in the commission of a crime is illegal or in general is illegal in many states. I found the following page that has a good summary (it's regarding health considerations but the laws still fit).
State Codes Related To Wearing Masks[^]

So, not turning yourself in before you commit the crime would become a 'perversion of justice' too?

This is along the lines I was thinking, basically what they're saying is if you try to cover it up you're perverting the course of justice.
