I've been reading articles on the crisis in Cyprus and all this time I thought the term for a native of the island, Cypriot, was a slur. I thought it was a play on the word idiot. Only after reading the term in a respected journal did I come to the conclusion it was a real word.
I think it's because the first several times I saw the term it was in the comments section and people have a tendency to make up terms when slamming someone. The term 'Obozo' comes to mind. I thought they'd done the same by combining Cyprus + Idiot = Cypriot.
My interest in the island is largely because I had a Nigerian prince recently deposit the sum of ten million into my account there. Now I'm gonna have 40% of that stolen by the EU. At this rate it will be another 6 years before I have enough saved up to build my own Death Star.

It's because so many people are confused by geography. They only have vague notions of where anything is. In this case, I think it stems from what they call people from Crete. An island is an island, after all.
What? They're not Cretins?

That's not so bad, what do you think they call people from Lesbos?

Lesbosians...

America is the only country that went from barbarism to decadence without civilization in between. -Oscar Wilde

If your from Crete are you a Cretin?
"...Envy, Bob. Envy eats them alive. If you had money they'd envy you that. But since you don't, they envy you for having such a good, bright, loving daughter. They envy you for not envying them. One of the greatests sorrows of human existence is that some people aren't happy merely to be alive but find their happiness only in the misery of others."
Lightning, Dean Koontz
