Well the State of Illinois gets to join the rest of the Union in granting its citizens the right to carry a firearm. Today an federal appellate court ruled the ban unconstitutional as self defense is one thing that the writers of the Constitution had in mind with the 2nd Amendment, and that the 2nd Amendment could not be confined to one's house.
In the opinion, Judge Richard Posner wrote that “a Chicagoan is a good deal more likely to be attacked on a sidewalk in a rough neighborhood than in his apartment on the 35th floor of the Park Tower.”
Rough neighborhood? How about any neighborhood.
“Nevertheless we order our mandate stayed for 180 days to allow the Illinois legislature to craft a new gun law that will impose reasonable limitations, consistent with the public safety and the Second Amendment as interpreted in this opinion, on the carrying of guns in public,” Posner said.
Ohh the options, to go 45acp or 357sig, probably both. 180 days: I'll have time to try a bunch subcompacts. I'm going to need a slide racker. Any suggestions on holsters + gun that work well together with a slide racker?

Yes, there is, the one run by criminals.
Here's one of your gun control advocates, arrested with... a gun, at an airport!

Despite his arrest on a felony bribery charge earlier this year, state Rep. Derrick Smith (D-Chicago) was re-elected in Tuesday's election.
Once re-elected, a state lawmaker in Illinois cannot be re-expelled by his or her peers for the same reason as a previous expulsion.

All politicians are corrupt. So what ? Is that a good reason to increase the odds of the guy robbing you or your home having a gun ?

You said the state wasn't run by gun nuts. I replied because it is run by felons.
Please explain how this will increase the chance of the guy robbing will have a gun? I'm pretty sure criminals don't follow the law.

Criminals do not have magic powers. They find it easier to get guns, if society is awash with them.
And it's not a dichotomy. Politicians tend to be crooked. Some can be gun nuts, while others are not. They are still all crooks.

It has nothing to do do directly with personal self defense. It's about protecting the Constitution and the people from run-away government and foreign invasion ("all enemies, foreign and domestic").

But surely less likely to be attacked by someone with a gun, than will be the case if carrying a gun becomes legal?
(and, yes, I'm sure there are lots of bad folk already carrying guns on the streets of the fair city, but at least they can be arrested solely for that act, at present)

I know many people who have been robbed and/or assaulted, not just at gunpoint. I've had a knife pulled on me. In the very least, at least now criminals won't think every single person on the street will make an easy unarmed victim. The "wildings" (flash mob beatings, robberies, etc) in Chicago have gotten out of control and relatively no publicity.

What's the point? They don't serve jailtime for it! Hell, you can point a gun at a cop and not go to jail.
"Prosecutors have argued that the rapper violated the terms of his probation by holding that rifle following his conviction for pointing a gun at a Chicago cop last year."
Probation... for pointing a gun at police.

Move to a different location. Arizona is a constitutional carry state. And it's warmer.

Not a lot of openings for software developers in the financial industry there. I have seen some in Nevada If I found a remote position, I'd move somewhere warmer in a heartbeat.

More accurately, they're restoring the 2nd Amendment right to people who have had that right infringed by the government. This is precisely how the separation of powers should work. The legislature imposes unconstitutional laws, and the judiciary shuts them down. I'm just surprised it works better in Illinois than it does here in Texas.

In fairness, it was a federal appellate court, which only happens to be located in Chicago.
