A friend of mine has expressed dismay at his lack of a passion in his life. Something that he has seen in others that keeps them motivated from day to day. I already gave him a bunch of ideas for things to try, but I'm curious what you all do that excites you (e.g., writing, kayaking, genetically engineering dragons)?
Note: "programming" and "family" are the obvious answers, so those are not allowed.

Great idea! I hadn't even thought of music (I myself am not yet of that inclination).

When your email came through I wasn't sure which of my two posts in this thread it was in response to
I don't play enough guitar these days to keep up the calluses - but got RockSmith as an Xmas Pressie - which has been a good excuse to get the axe out again!

Volunteer firefighting (real busy day coming tomorrow). I have a specialist communications role (two, actually) and the whole thing is mentally challenging and rewarding (if you don't totally stuff up!) A great mob to work with, then relax at the end of a hard day.
Cheers,
Peter

Neat! I have never really done any volunteer work, but I know a few people who find that very rewarding (one of my friends is actually a firefighter). I will pass on the idea.

Thanks Josh. I'll be wearing my Aviation Radio Operator hat for the day. With any luck, I'll catch up with some of my chopper pilot mates. Hope they have time to chat. Given the predicted weather, if anything catches, it'll go whoosh in a big way. I'll report in tomorrow night when I get home.
Cheers,
Peter

Rowing[^] is good - you get to exercise all the major muscle groups, and you get ahead in the world in a backwards kind of manner.

It has been 30 years since I last did that and probably would have to take a few baths in the river again before I get anywhere with a boat again. There was a certain location in the river where we rowed by really carefully. There two swans used to have their nest and they protected it.

Bought a single 8 years ago and was quite active for a while - kind of miss that, but there just isn't enough time these days. Have a Concept 2[^] at home, and should probably spend more time on it.

Going camping in our 1976 VW Campervan (Super Viking conversion) - most weekends in summer (and many in winter) see us heading off with friends to camp, sit around a big fire, cooking and drinking and talking crap into the early hours.
Other than that: Rugby League and our dogs

I go to Muay Thai training twice a week. Going out and party hard is another thing but might not be fitting anyones interests.
Every year I go to Italy for one week with some good friends. Always fun, we have no contact to anyone back in switzerland for the whole week.

I used to do that. Fought quite a few times - lost a lot of them. Sadly, the knees and gut gave out.

I started with it about half a year ago. Used to spend my time in Kung Fu training before but I like Muay Thai more (It is quite like a workout for me).
Luckily my coach is very experienced (he does it for about 30 years now).
But I suggest he gained a lot of his experience in street fights when he was younger .

I started with Chang Chuan Wu Shu, then moved onto Escrima before finally taking up Muay Thai. Had I kept with it, I would probably have ended up doing Capoeira as well. Sadly, the lure of the expense account got to me.

I was doing Wing Chun Kung Fu, invented by a chinese nun (I was pretty surprised when I heard this )

I studied in the UK with a guy called Jimmy McEvoy - he studied with Dan Inosanto, then studied Muay Thai with Master Toddy and Master Sken.
