I've been noticing that it doesn't seem to do anything now - websites can figure out what country I'm from even with it on.  (I now use Opera, which seems to be working fine.)

I used to work where the owner adored opera - so it played in every room, all day, every day ... until he went on holiday when the CD was yanked, replaced with actual music, and used as a frisbee for the dogs.

No, no - he used to be a Ships Pilot back in the day, on vessels like the Queen Mary before he got into electronics design.
Unfortunately, he passed away last year and the world is a sadder place - he was a "true boffin": mad as a hatter, but good with a circuit diagram! He used to ring up Bill Gates in his garage (pre the DOS days) and yell at him because his code was so bad.

I guess I am not adventurous enough. I think I rarely visit any site outside of the US.

I do not think it is Betternet related.
There is a configuration setting, client side, which selects if you use your or the VPN gateway access. I was working from home on our office VPN, and some our projects require an office IP but I got rejected since my home IP showed up.

It's an old game and it may be a little hard to get to run, despite the game being from Mickeysoft. But what could be more fun than playing the air pirate with fictional 1930s airplanes and an airship as pirate ship/aircraft carrier?
