No; because YOU have to pay for it, it is not an "exclusive" club, any other schmuck can shell out $100 and be a member.

I was going to join the BCS (British Computer Society) back when you had to be well qualified, very experienced and recommended by someone else (PhD, 20+ years of experience [at that time, 35+ now] and several admirers [all dead now]). I didn't at the time as I didn't see the point and didn't want to pay the modest annual fee. Now anyone with enough money can BUY one of several membership levels for enough money and keep it going with a large annual fee - definitely not worth it anymore.

And yes, they are really fond of acronyms, They seem to have one for everything. That's what we call 'AbKüFi" here. 'Abkürzungsfimmel', certainly the next word to be borrowed to the English dictionary.

I'm not accusing you of this, and I hope your chapter is better, but honestly, the ACM office at my school was mostly full of people with the pretentious "I'm more important/better than everything" attitude. While some of the SIGs worked on some cool projects, and ACM hosted some nice events, overall, the non-ACM and ACM people within the Computer Science department didn't mix very much.

Our ACM 'chapter' is actually run by several professors from the CS department, so they get along well. There are no 'I am better than everyone' people there, and anyone who does things like that gets knocked down pretty quickly, as the people working the group are very strict on not having such an attitude towards others. The ACM chapter at Purdue is the same way.
The group also does a lot of different things, like rebuilding and selling old computers to students for a deep discount (e.g. a desktop with ~4GB RAM and a 250GB HDD will cost about $20-$40, depending on the number available and a few other factors. We also fix laptops.)

I think one of the big problems that our ACM office had (I wasn't a member) was that there actually were people that were better than everyone else, at least on an academic/programming level.
There were a couple kids in particular that I can think of that were amazingly smart, but were complete douches about it. They viewed everyone else in the department as stupid, even though every single one of us was an intelligent person, otherwise we never would have been accepted into the department.

Well, we do have people who have various strengths, but Ivy Tech in general discourages this kind of 'I am the MASTER! Everyone bow down to me or be thrown to the depths-of-Hades' kind of behavior. The college wants to create an equal learning environment for everyone, and they are doing a rather nice job at it.
