Know your audience. This a programming forum after all. Besides if I bothered to adhere to A.P. or Chicago style guides I would never write anything. Personally I hate going to 5 from 1. I think from 1 to 5 is so much better.

Probably most of us would bounce...
But would your audience? Non tech people don't know the difference between the https and http in the url... and they don't know why public computers are dangerous places for inputing credit card details.
So, go ahead and find another solution, but don't let that scare you from finishing the project (unless there really is a security hole).

Doesn't bother me these days, because it's so common.
In fact, if I went to a small vendor website and I saw they were trying to roll their own shopping cart, I'd be more likely to bounce because of a fear that they wouldn't secure my CC details properly.
Lots of folks send you to another site for the actual shopping cart. First one that springs to my mind is Jetbrains. And yes, the shopping cart looks like ass.

With the exception of a pay with paypal (or amazon or google) button I'd bounce.

That happened to me recently. I bailed, did some research, figured out what they were doing and finished my purchase. However, had the item in question been readily available on Amazon or New Egg, I would have paid a little more instead.

Before you switch sites, just let them know. That way it's expected, you haven't been hacked (at least this isn't evidence of it  ) and they understand you're using a third party payment system.

I saw a link to a men's clothing website and I thought it might be of interest.
I visited the site and within 2 minutes went from 'interested' to 'die in a fire, bitches!'
You get one guess as to why there was this sudden change of attitude.

Well, I blew 30 seconds wondering if I'd hit the www.dieinafire.com/login.asp page and once I'd determined I was on the default page I was slightly stunned for nearly a full minute. After that there was a 15 second fantasy involving a private island and hunting these people for sport.
I spent another 15 seconds thinking about the possibilities of that guy actually being my EX but I don't wanna talk about it.

That is impressive, I registered with the First name elephant, the second name off, the email address elephantoff@yousunshines.com and a password that means bottoms in the UK.
It completed my registration, but then when I tried to log in with my new email address and password it said "UNSUPPORTED EMAIL PROVIDER - PLEASE LOGIN WITH GMAIL, HOTMAIL, YAHOO!, OR AOL".
Yep, you can only get onto their site if you register with an email from one of those providers.
Scratch that, it wanted me to login to my email through their site.
If you just type any old crap into the registration thing it lets you into the website.
I must admit that looking at my profile page is amusing me, as is seeing my first name in the top right corner of the screen.
