Standard simple rubbish - it's a test of your thinking, rather than your abilities.
They are - sort of - a good idea, in that they show the interviewer how you work through a problem rather than the finished result, which can indicate how flexible and logical you are.
But generally? Waste of time unless they are done face to face, and then the time limit is irrelevant.

thats true i agree to it. and one more thing, here there are a lot of walk in interviews. about 1000 people come to attend the interview.
So the strategy they adopt to cut off the mass is to put constraints/criteria which are baseless like:
1>You need to score a distinction through out your academics.
2>You field needs to be computer science.
and lot of such bull sh*t. So half of the crowd is cut off.

You've got to: even if you only give 1/2 hour per interview, 1000 of them is over sixty working days!
You have to cut it down to manageable numbers before you start interviews - that's what a CV / Resume is for!

Why not just fold it into half (or quarters for 15 min) when it reaches the fold you're done

For 45, cut it in half, burn one half, then burn the other from both ends.

You're not allowed to cut it - by folding it into quarters you can get any multiple of 15 minutes up to 60 including 45

If you read some of the other posts, you'll note that this was disallowed: "Not allowed to fold the rope".

The only way this can be done with a single rope is either by exact measurement or proportions of the rope. Since you can neither measure it (no tools) nor find proportions (requires bending the rope) this cannot be done accurately.
However, if you have two ropes this may be possible:
Light both ends of one rope and one end of the second. When the first rope is fully burnt light the other end of the second rope.

As for the rope, what are you allowed to do? Are you allowed to fold it in half?
The smilies are even more under-specified. What exactly are the moves you're allowed to use? "Use a combination of (2 + 1)" doesn't mean anything.

I'm guessing that in the interview it wasn't in English, and it just doesn't translate well.
