Are you suggesting one can objectively place a price on a human life, then? If so, what would it be (in your opinion)? Next question: what if it were your own child's life? Hard and horrible question, I know, but that's exactly my point.

We aren't talking about a human life here - the people were dead before the search even started.
But more to your question, yes, we can put a price on human life.
It may be crude but we do it on a daily basis.
For example, did you know if we reduced the speed limit on the Freeway to 25 MPH we could save gas AND save thousands of lives per year? At some point someone made the decision that the cost in human lives was worth the 70 MPH speed limit.
This happens with safety issues a hundred times per day.

Amazon UK has a "special offers" page, holding eBooks they are giving away: £0.00p including delivery.
Now, I thought a couple of them might be interesting, so I bought them for my Android Kindle app.
And I've just had a series of emails from amazon thanking me for buying each one and giving me a voucher worth £1.19 because I bought a non-fiction ebook...

This story[^] is almost identical to something that happened to my wife.
Or at least his version of it is, hit car, thought there was no damage, later contacted by police, immediately admitted responsibility, contacted insurance, covered repairs of all damage.
She was taken to court, given 5 penalty points on her licence and a fine equivalent to two weeks wages.
It'll be interesting, to me at least, to see what action is taken against Balls.

My parked bike was knocked over in the street by an old dear who got out of her car to see if she had damaged her car, she then drove away in front of witnesses one of whom left their details.
The police did nothing other than say they had 'spoken' to the woman - so I had to pursue the claim through my insurance company and have £700 of damage repaired.
I discovered that the police use 'discretion' quite a lot when it comes to these sorts of issues.
