Can't you just open debug mode and run the compiler, debugger and coffee machine within EMACS?

Maybe, but you could definitely run a very big telescope! When I was working for the RGO one of the developers wrote a control system using Emacs as the front end.
One day I aspire to having a signature.

In that case, find the button on the case with overlapping "1" and "0" characters. Then either press (if a momentary switch) or flip (if a toggle) it.

Ummm... but the computer is a mainframe in another building behind physical security and I'm pretty sure I'm not allowed to flip that switch.
You'll never get very far if all you do is follow instructions.

There're physical power lines between the grid and the building. Borrow a backhoe to disconnect them. You can do the same for the connection to the sites emergency generator. This will trigger a reboot as soon as the mainframe's UPS dies. If the site has a generator this will probably only take a few minutes since the generator would be the primary backup.

switch to using the terminal next to it - your session will time out in half an hour. When that happens vi will be closed.
Or you could call the operators and tell them your session has been disconnected - can they kill it

They are a pet that you do not have to invest very much effort into.

Clearly a statement of a human, who never really had a cat for a pet.
Cats may not need to take them out for walks, but surely you need to take care of them
-each day you must clean their bio
-take care of water, food
-take care of their daily exercise(most fun part of the day including a small ball for cats) [If you don't they will remind you in 3 am in the morning next day]
-give your pet a fare share of attention (petting, holding etc)If you don't they will be angry at you, and you don't want to have an angry cat for a pet, you just don't.
And kids don't forget, even if you do some activity not involving your cat (for example reading), if you are caught, it will become a cat involving activity

That's one way of doing it, alternatively you could just be like our neighbours who have three that all just roam the streets 24/7 and spend 99% of their time in our front garden.
